The PLA Navy hospital ship *Silk Road Ark* departed Zhanjiang, Guangdong, on May 31 for its third 'Healthcare to the Maritime Frontier' mission since commissioning in 2024, bound for South China Sea islands and reefs to provide garrison personnel and family members with free medical services via onboard treatment, island patrol visits, and door-to-door delivery, while also conducting casualty treatment drills and medical equipment maintenance. The mission documents a recurring logistical challenge the PLA has institutionalized rather than solved: South China Sea garrison personnel face chronic musculoskeletal and dermatological conditions that require periodic shipborne medical intervention, indicating that fixed medical infrastructure on the islands and reefs remains insufficient to sustain garrison health without supplemental support. The 'Silk Road Ark's' three deployments in roughly one year of service extend the pattern established by its predecessor and confirm that the Southern Theater Navy has embedded this welfare-and-readiness function into the ship's operational tempo from the outset.

Xinhua, Guangzhou, May 31 (Liu Yinuo, Tang Lei) — The Chinese Navy hospital ship 'Silk Road Ark' cast off from a military port in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, on May 31 and set sail for islands and reefs in the South Sea and along the South China coast to carry out the 'Healthcare to the Maritime Frontier' (健康送海疆) mission.

This mission focuses on conditions commonly affecting personnel stationed on islands and reefs, including neck, shoulder, lower back, and leg pain, skin diseases, and chronic illnesses. The ship is equipped with both Chinese and Western medical diagnostic and treatment equipment as well as commonly used medications, and has formed a multidisciplinary medical service team. Cultural and arts personnel are also embarked, achieving dual coverage of 'medical services + cultural outreach' (医疗服务+文化慰问).

During the mission, the hospital ship will employ a combined approach of 'onboard diagnosis and treatment + island patrol visits + door-to-door medical delivery' (上船诊疗+登岛巡诊+上门送医相结合) to provide garrison personnel and their family members on the islands with free consultations, physical examinations, traditional Chinese medicine physiotherapy, surgical treatment, health education, and other services. Simultaneously, the ship will conduct at-sea casualty treatment drills, medical backbone mentoring and assistance, and medical equipment inspection and maintenance.

The 'Silk Road Ark' is China's second indigenously designed and built ocean-going hospital ship of the ten-thousand-ton class. This is the third time the vessel has carried out the 'Healthcare to the Maritime Frontier' (健康送海疆) mission since it was commissioned in 2024.
