Ten thousand li of open sky, wind and thunder surging — the thunderous roar of combat aircraft reverberates through the clouds, as if sounding a powerful and stirring anthem of victory in battle.

Across distant seas and vast oceans, waves roll and clouds billow. Combat aircraft pierce cloud and mist in a lightning strike, locking onto the "enemy" with the precision of a hunting falcon in a complex electromagnetic environment.

Data links share information in real time; battlefield situational awareness is integrated across the force; naval and air power clench into a fist for coordinated strikes… In early summer, a unit of the Southern Theater Command Air Force took the lead in organizing a multi-service joint offensive and defensive training exercise, further clearing away several bottleneck problems constraining the effectiveness of joint operations.

From tempering the sword on the Gobi to combat patrols over distant seas, from platform-centric victory to system-of-systems integration (体系融合)… Pressing forward in the new era on a new journey, this unit has thoroughly implemented Xi Jinping's thought on strengthening the military, established and practiced a correct view of performance (政绩观) in which everything serves combat and only practical results and truth are sought, consciously discarded empty achievements and hollow performance (虚功虚绩), and resolutely guarded against superficiality and impetuousness. In the course of training for war and forging ahead through hard challenges, the unit has tempered its hard skills for winning, striving to write an answer sheet for a strong military that is worthy of the era, worthy of the mission, and worthy of the people.

From Pursuing "I Am Strong" to "We Are Strong": Forging a New "Self" Through System-of-Systems Integration

Combat aircraft roar and circle overhead; ground-based air defense radar clusters form networked arrays; surface vessels patrol in readiness for battle… In April in the south of the country, under the unified direction and command of this unit, a multi-service combined arms training exercise gradually reached its stride.

On the air combat situational display, an "enemy" aircraft stealthily closes in. A pilot operates calmly, locks onto the target with precision — a combat result within easy reach, right before his eyes.

This was the perfect moment to demonstrate individual flight technical and tactical skill and claim a single-aircraft victory. All he had to do was press the launch button to secure a dazzling result. But at the instant his fingertip applied pressure, the data link simultaneously transmitted the battlefield situation: a friendly neighboring unit had not yet completed its attack positioning. A rash strike would prematurely expose their own position, disrupt the entire operational deployment, and could even lead to defeat in system-of-systems combat (体系作战).

Attack, or abort? This was the choice placed before the pilot.

"An individual's moment of glory is no match for the high-efficiency empowerment of the system operating as a whole!" Without hesitation, he immediately aborted the attack, broke off, and skimmed low over the sea to coordinate with the neighboring unit's action. The power of the system formed a mighty combined force, allowing them to quickly seize the initiative on the complex and ever-changing battlefield.

Stepping down from the aircraft, the pilot looked back at the situational display from that moment and felt deeply satisfied: "That was the right call!"

What was abandoned in that abort was individual visible achievement and personal recognition; what was supported in that assist was the overall situation and victory through the system.

"In the past, we always fixated on individual aircraft air combat scores and single-subject excellence rates. But it was only on the joint training ground that we truly understood — no matter how outstanding an individual is, separated from the system it is hard to form a combined force; no matter how prominent the scores, without coordination there can be no real training effectiveness." The unit's leadership explained: operating within a system-of-systems, every officer and soldier must possess this sense of the larger picture.

Operating within a combat system-of-systems, only by re-examining one's combat position and reshaping the capabilities and qualities of officers and soldiers can one adapt to the rapidly changing future battlefield. Confronting the imperative of joint operations, the unit mustered the courage to turn the blade inward and correct its course, setting off wave after wave of "brainstorming": centering on "for whom do we train, what kind of soldiers do we train, and how do we train them," officers and soldiers were guided to break free from the limitations of single-service thinking, and concepts such as "strength of the system is true strength" and "being able to fight and win is the greatest achievement" were genuinely engraved in their minds, fused into their blood, and brought to bear at their combat positions.

Confronting problem blockages head-on, the unit further deepened routine joint training with naval surface vessels, army air defense, radar early warning, and other forces — progressing from combined training with aircraft of the same type, to mixed training with aircraft of different types, to integrated ship-aircraft joint training and beyond — advancing layer by layer, closely aligned with actual combat, and driving joint training from "ad hoc combined exercises" to "routine required coursework."

From pursuing "I am strong" to "we are strong," forging a new "self" through system-of-systems integration. All participating units pooled their wisdom around "unified command, unified language, unified action," embodying joint victory in the smooth operation of every data link, the maturation of every set of tactics, and the tacit coordination of every joint action. They successively solved training difficulties such as ship-aircraft coordination and dissimilar-aircraft adversarial training, and compiled multiple sets of practical tactics. They broke with traditional assessment models and adopted the system contribution rate (体系贡献率) as the primary standard for measuring training quality and effectiveness.

Another battle commences. In the air, multiple types of combat aircraft engage in fierce offensive and defensive action; at sea, surface vessels and aircraft build an integrated combat system. After one pilot is locked onto by the "enemy," he executes a high-angle maneuver to break free, simultaneously shares situational data and requests guidance, and quickly completes a counterattack.

"Victory or defeat in battle does not depend on numbers, but on separation and combination — only by integrating into the system can one prevail in the future." Stepping down from the aircraft, the pilot said.

Multi-service forces broke down barriers to "sharpen their swords on the same stage," driving system-of-systems training onto the "fast track." Today, cross-domain coordination and active integration have become a training instinct for officers and soldiers; joint exercises and training have achieved routine and standardized operation; multiple cross-domain coordination challenges have been overcome; and the unit's system-of-systems combat capability has steadily improved.

Better a "Low Score" with High Combat Content Than a "Gold Medal" Divorced from Actual Combat

Radar equipment vehicles filed out one after another and raced into position — a mobile combat training assessment organized by a subordinate unit of this formation got underway abruptly.

Special situations arose in rapid succession; complex and ever-changing electromagnetic signals surged in like a tide, and pressure spiked sharply. Someone privately suggested: "Perhaps we could moderately reduce the jamming intensity, stabilize the unit's excellent assessment scores, and preserve our ranking and face."

Maintaining high scores versus training for actual combat were placed on the same scale. Which outweighs which was self-evident.

The commander did not hesitate for a moment, his position resolute: "Training for war is for winning. We would rather have a low score earned through hard knocks and grinding, and absolutely will not accept a false high score inflated with water!"

"Training hard with live ammunition today is so that tomorrow we can fight without disgracing our mission. Training for war cannot tolerate even a trace of showmanship — it must be real, it must be hard." Staff Officer Xu of the unit said: "Every additional unknown problem solved today means one more point of advantage on the battlefield tomorrow."

Dawn light barely breaking, another daybreak arrived on schedule. An air defense alarm suddenly pierced the sky at the position of a detached training sub-unit of this formation, as an unidentified air situation arrived without warning.

Officers and soldiers quickly took their positions upon receiving the order; targets were detected in a timely manner; camouflage and protection were in place. Yet throughout the exercise, they repeatedly "fumbled."

What appeared to be an abnormal exercise failure was in fact the officers and soldiers deliberately setting their own "hard mode" — reporting key information such as radar activation timing and position fire configuration to sister units, intentionally creating an extreme environment of one-sided battlefield "transparency," forcing officers and soldiers to temper their skills and tap their potential in passive situations and perilous, desperate circumstances.

"We proactively raised the training threshold and set up strong 'enemy' opponents ourselves, precisely to construct an asymmetric battlefield environment close to actual combat." The sub-unit commander explained: by forcing the issue under extreme conditions, they specifically attacked weak points in tactics and methods, filled gaps in coordination and cooperation, and tested equipment performance bottlenecks, comprehensively improving the unit's emergency response, combat readiness, and war-winning capability under complex situations and passive circumstances.

Proactively adding pressure is not blindly piling on, but a mission consciousness that brooks no delay, and a training commitment oriented toward and for war. During training, the unit consciously broke down the ingrained thinking of prioritizing rankings over effectiveness, visible achievements over latent achievements, and set routines over actual combat. It resolutely wrung out the water from training, cleared away the hollow gloss of training, and consistently used the measure of actual combat to assess training results and verify training effectiveness.

During one major mission support task, a certain aircraft maintenance sub-unit received orders from higher command: combat aircraft must be ready to take off at any time, with a mandatory one-start success, zero faults throughout, and return without special incidents.

On the apron, Mechanical Technician Gao Jiajun led his crew in sifting through the engine, flight control, hydraulic, fuel, and other critical systems item by item. During the final re-inspection, he discovered a barely perceptible trace of oil seepage deep inside the engine nacelle.

"Anomaly detected — halt work and re-inspect immediately!" He immediately ordered work stopped. "Taking off means going into combat. We cannot fly out with even a trace of a hidden hazard!"

The crew searched through the heat, and ultimately found a hairline crack at an extremely concealed conduit fitting. They rapidly replaced the component, repeatedly pressure-tested and adjusted, until all parameters met the standard.

At the break of dawn, the combat aircraft roared into the sky and returned safely hours later — zero faults, zero deviations throughout.

Better a "low score" with high combat content than a "gold medal" divorced from actual combat. These aircraft maintenance officers and soldiers proved through their actions: the confidence to win in war never comes from a momentarily dazzling result, but from every maintenance check that can withstand the test of actual combat.

Not for Awards, Not for Fame — Only to Be Able to Fight and Win

The roar of engines wrapped in waves of heat; the aircraft maintenance workshop was a scene of busy activity. Warrant Officer Second Class, Squad Leader Wang, was leading technical backbone personnel in repeatedly comparing measurements and studying details around an aircraft's tires.

In routine aircraft maintenance support, using traditional measuring tools to calculate tire compression produced excessive error and insufficient precision; high-altitude maintenance lacked a stable working platform, which was both time-consuming and labor-intensive, and posed safety hazards. These long-standing shortcomings and pain points had at one time troubled front-line support officers and soldiers.

As a grassroots "maker" on the front line, Squad Leader Wang saw this clearly and felt the urgency keenly. Drawing on years of practical experience accumulated in aircraft maintenance, he hand-drew design sketches and improvised with available materials and on-site modifications.

Accumulating day by day, persisting over the long term — a tire compression measurement tool that was easy to operate and precise in calculation, and a mobile, highly stable high-altitude maintenance work platform, quietly took shape in his hands. These innovation results both simplified the maintenance process and reduced working time, while also improving support precision and reinforcing the safety baseline, earning praise from officers and soldiers.

Throughout the entire process, Squad Leader Wang's innovations sought neither surface gloss nor awards and recognition. Nor were voices of incomprehension absent around him: spending so much effort researching and innovating, when it is hard to win awards and hard to stand out — what exactly is the point? Facing others' skepticism, Squad Leader Wang knew clearly in his own mind: innovation and improvement serve only one purpose — to give comrades-in-arms one less risk, and to give the combat aircraft one more measure of reliability.

If Squad Leader Wang's small grassroots innovations represent the practical commitment of front-line officers and soldiers standing firm at their posts, then the concentrated hard work of scientific research backbone personnel has injected even stronger technological momentum into the unit's transformation and development.

An ordinary room of just over ten square meters — one desk, a few computers, a whiteboard covered in formulas and plans, plus a server — this is the entirety of Senior Engineer Zhang's domain within the unit. Yet within this room, all manner of possibilities for unit innovation and combat power improvement are taking shape.

"Not seeking awards or rankings, not seeking fame or recognition — only treating the pain points of combat training as research and development targets, taking 'combat content' (含战量) as the sole standard for measuring innovation results, and pressing forward with the spirit of hammering in a nail, one strike after another." This is the founding commitment to innovation that Senior Engineer Zhang upholds.

"In the past, aircraft maintenance support work required carrying a thick stack of paper work cards at all times. After a mission, they had to be manually organized and summarized line by line — the process was cumbersome, efficiency was low, and errors and omissions were easy to occur." Targeting the accumulated deficiencies and shortcomings of the traditional support model, Senior Engineer Zhang proactively took the lead in forming a research and development team, determined to create an intelligent system integrating daily support, professional training, and maintenance assistance, and to give multi-aircraft-type universal support the wings of technology.

To overcome the technical challenges as early as possible, he kept company with vast amounts of data and made the server room his home. After repeated rounds of debugging and optimization, iterative upgrades, a multi-aircraft-type support assistance system was successfully developed and deployed, making aircraft maintenance support processes more standardized, analysis and judgment more precise, and handling more efficient.

By virtue of its significant practical combat value, this innovation result ultimately won the gold award at the "Strong Equipment Cup" (强装杯) unit equipment management and application innovation competition.

The trophy and the honor affirm innovation and improvement, but they were never the objective. For Squad Leader Wang and Senior Engineer Zhang, there is only one form of genuine sense of achievement: comrades-in-arms can use it, the battlefield can rely on it, and there is confidence to win.

Innovation is not for awards, not for fame — only to be able to fight and win. Today, on the journey of empowering combat training through digital intelligence (数智赋能), this unit has a large cohort of pioneers like Senior Engineer Zhang who dare to blaze new trails and take on practical responsibilities —

Dr. Luo leads a software group with participation from officers and soldiers across different positions, successively developing multiple systems serving flight training and combat operations, helping to integrate flight data, intelligently assess training quality, and dynamically track pilot status. Senior Engineer Li developed a combat aircraft external stores management system, optimizing the loading process and reducing sortie turnaround time, greatly improving the rapid response capability of combat aircraft…

"No innovation is too small — if it's practical, it's a treasure." In the view of this unit's officers and soldiers, anything that helps achieve victory is the greatest commendation for innovation.

From system-of-systems training to actual combat tempering, from practical commitment to digital-intelligent empowerment, this unit has consistently treated winning as its sole pursuit and greatest achievement. On the journey toward realizing the centenary goal of the founding of the People's Liberation Army, they spread their wings to soar, their steps resolute and resounding — and all the tempering and striving points in one direction: the future battlefield, victory with a single strike.

云霄无虚步 长空有实痕 ——来自南部战区空军某部的调查报告 ■解放军报记者 陈典宏 特约记者 王 男 特约通讯员 赵雨桐 该部组织编队飞行训练。姜广振摄 万里长空,风雷激荡,战鹰巨大的轰鸣声响彻云霄,好似奏响一曲雄浑激昂的胜战乐章。 远海大洋,浪卷云涌,战机穿云破雾、雷霆突击,在复杂电磁环境下如猎鹰般精准锁“敌”。 数据链实时共享,战场态势一体感知,海空力量攥指成拳、协同打击……初夏时节,南部战区空军某部牵头组织一场多军兵种联合攻防训练,多个制约联合作战效能的堵点问题被进一步打通。 从戈壁砺剑到远海战巡,从平台制胜到体系融合……奋进新时代新征程,该部深入贯彻习近平强军思想,树立和践行一切为战、唯实求真的正确政绩观,自觉摒弃虚功虚绩、力戒浮华浮躁,在练兵备战、开拓攻坚中锤炼打赢硬功,奋力书写不负时代、不负使命、不负人民的强军答卷。 从追求“我强”到“我们强”,在体系融合中塑造新“我” 空中战机呼啸盘旋,地导雷达集群组网,海面舰船巡弋待战……南国四月,在该部统一导调指挥下,一场多军兵种合成训练渐入佳境。 空战态势图上,“敌”机悄然逼近。一名飞行员沉着操作、精准锁定目标,唾手可得的战果就在眼前。 这是彰显个人飞行技战术水平、拿下单机优胜战绩的绝佳时刻,只要按下发射按钮,就能斩获亮眼成绩。就在这名飞行员指尖发力的瞬间,数据链同步传来战场态势:友邻部队尚未完成攻击布势,贸然出击会提前暴露己方位置,打乱整个作战部署,甚至导致体系作战失利。 攻击还是放弃?这道选择题,摆在这名飞行员面前。 “个人的高光,不如体系运转的高效赋能!”没有犹豫,他当即放弃攻击回转脱离,低空掠海配合友邻部队行动。体系威力形成强大合力,让他们很快在复杂多变的战场上占据主动。 走下战机,这名飞行员回看当时的态势图,十分欣慰:“这一步走对了!” 这一弃,弃的是个人显绩、出名挂号;这一援,援的是全局考量、体系打赢。 “过去,我们总盯着单机空战成绩、单课目优秀率;可真到联合训练场上才明白——个体再优秀,脱离体系也难成合力;成绩再突出,没有协同也难有练兵实效。”该部领导介绍,身处体系之中,每名官兵都应有这种大局意识。 身处作战体系中,只有重新审视战位、重塑官兵能力素质,才能适应瞬息万变的未来战场。面对联合作战大势,该部以刀刃向内的勇气纠偏正向,刮起一场场“头脑风暴”:围绕“为谁练兵、练什么兵、怎么练兵”,引导官兵跳出单一军兵种思维局限,切实把“体系强才是真的强”“能打仗、打胜仗才是最大政绩”等理念刻进脑海、融入血脉、落在战位。 直面问题梗阻,他们进一步深化与海军舰艇、陆军防空、雷达预警等部队的常态联训,从同型机合训到异型机混训,再到舰机一体联训等,层层递进、紧贴实战,推动联合训练由“临时合练”变为“常态必修”。 从追求“我强”到“我们强”,在体系融合中塑造新“我”。各参训单位围绕“统一指挥、统一话语、统一行动”集智攻关,把联合制胜体现在每一条链路的畅通、每一套战法的成熟、每一次协同的默契上,先后破解舰机协同、异型机对抗等训练难题,总结形成多套实用战法;打破传统考评模式,将体系贡献率作为衡量训练质效的主要标准。 又一场战斗打响。空中,多型战机攻防激烈;海上,舰艇与战机构建一体作战体系。一名飞行员遭“敌”锁定后,大角度机动摆脱,同步共享态势、请求引导,很快完成反击。 “兵之胜负,不在众寡,而在分合,融入体系方能制胜未来。”走下战机,这名飞行员说。 多军兵种部队打破壁垒“同台砺剑”,推动体系练兵驶入“快车道”。如今,跨域协同、主动融入已成官兵训练自觉,联演联训实现常态化、规范化,多项跨域协同难题被攻克,部队体系作战能力稳步提升。 宁要含战量高的“低分”,也不要脱离实战的“金牌” 雷达装备车鱼贯而出、疾驰开进,该部所属单位一场机动作战训练考核骤然展开。 特情接踵而至,复杂多变的电磁信号如潮水涌来,压力陡然增大。有人私下提议:“不妨适度降低干扰强度,稳住部队考核的优良成绩,保住名次脸面。” 保高分与练实战,摆在了同一天平上。孰轻孰重,一目了然。 指挥员没有丝毫犹豫,态度坚决:“练兵备战为打赢,宁要摔打磨砺的考核低分,绝不要掺假注水的虚假高分!” “今日真刀真枪地练,就是为了明天不辱使命地战。练兵备战来不得半点花架子,必须实打实、硬碰硬。”该部许参谋说,“今天多破解一个未知难题,明天上战场就多一分胜算。” 晨光熹微,又一个黎明如约而至。该部某驻训分队阵地防空警报骤然响彻长空,不明空情不期而至。 官兵闻令迅速就位,发现目标及时,伪装防护到位。然而,整场演练他们频频“失手”。 看似反常的演练失利,实则是官兵主动自设“困难模式”——将雷达开机时机、阵地火力配置等关键信息通报兄弟单位,刻意营造战场态势单向“透明”的极端环境,倒逼官兵在被动局面、险难绝境中淬炼本领、挖掘潜能。 “我们主动抬高练兵门槛、自设强‘敌’对手,就是要构建贴近实战的不对等战场环境。”分队指挥员介绍,通过极限条件倒逼,专攻战术战法弱项、补齐协同配合短板、检验装备性能瓶颈,全面提升部队在复杂态势、被动局面下的应急应战和打赢能力。 主动加压不是盲目加码,而是时不我待的使命自觉,是向战为战的练兵担当。训练中,该部自觉破除重名次轻实效、重显绩轻潜绩、重套路轻实战的惯性思维,坚决挤干训练水分、清除练兵虚光,始终以实战成色衡量练兵成绩、检验训练实效。 一次重大任务保障中,某机务分队接到上级命令:战机随时升空,必须一次启动成功、全程零故障、无特情返航。 停机坪上,机械技师高佳俊带领班组逐项“过筛”发动机、飞控、液压、燃油等关键系统。最后复检时,他在发动机舱深处发现一丝难以察觉的滑油痕迹。 “有异常,立即停工复检!”他当即叫停作业,“升空就是作战,有一丝隐患都不能飞出去!” 班组人员顶着热浪排查,最终在极隐蔽的导管接头处找到细微裂纹,迅速更换部件、反复试压调试,直至所有参数达标。 破晓时分,战机呼啸升空,数小时后顺利返航,全程零故障、零偏差。 宁要含战量高的“低分”,也不要脱离实战的“金牌”。这群机务官兵用行动证明:胜战底气从不来自一时的亮眼成绩,而在于每一次检修都经得起实战检验。 不为评奖、不为出名,只为能打仗、打胜仗 轰鸣声裹挟着热浪,机务维修车间内一片忙碌。二级军士长王班长正带领技术骨干,绕着战机轮胎反复比对尺寸、琢磨细节。 日常机务保障中,沿用传统量具测算轮胎压缩量,误差偏大、精度不足;高空检修缺少稳固作业平台,既费时费力,又存在安全隐患。这些长期存在的短板痛点,一度困扰着一线保障官兵。 作为身处一线的基层“创客”,王班长看在眼里、急在心头,他凭着多年机务维修积累的实战经验,手绘设计草图,就地取材、就地改造。 日积月累、久久为功,一款操作简便、测算精准的轮胎压缩量测量工具,一个可移动、高稳固的高空维修操作平台,在他手中悄然成型。这些革新成果既简化了维修流程、压缩了作业时长,又提升了保障精度、筑牢了安全底线,赢得官兵点赞。 从始至终,王班长的革新不图表面光鲜和出名获奖。身边也不乏不解的声音:费心费力钻研革新,既难评奖项、又难出风头,究竟图什么?面对旁人的质疑,王班长心里清楚:创新革新只是为了让战友少一分风险、让战鹰多一分可靠。 如果说王班长的基层小革新,是一线官兵立足岗位的实干担当,那么科研骨干的聚力攻坚,则为部队转型发展注入了更强劲的科技动能。 一间十余平方米的普通房间,一张办公桌、几台电脑、一块写满公式方案的白板,再加一台服务器,便是该部张高工的全部家当。就在这个房间里,孕育着部队创新和战斗力提升的各种可能。 “不图评奖排名,不求出名出彩,只把战训痛点当作研发靶点,把‘含战量’作为衡量创新成果的唯一标准,以钉钉子精神一锤接着一锤攻坚攻关。”这是张高工坚守的创新初心。 “以往机务保障作业,要随身携带厚厚一沓纸质工卡,任务结束后还要人工整理、逐条汇总,流程繁琐、效率低下,还容易出现疏漏差错。”瞄准传统保障模式的积弊短板,张高工主动牵头组建研发团队,立志打造一套集日常保障、专业训练、维修辅助于一体的智能系统,为多机种通用保障插上科技翅膀。 为早日攻克技术难关,他与海量数据为伴、以机房工位为家。历经一次次调试优化、迭代升级,一套多机种保障辅助系统成功研制落地,让机务保障流程更规范、研判更精准、处置更高效。 凭借重要的实战价值,这项创新成果最终荣获“强装杯”部队装备管理运用创新大赛金奖。 奖杯和荣誉是对创新革新的肯定,但从来不是目的。对王班长和张高工而言,真正的成就感只有一种:战友用得上、战场靠得住、打赢有底气。 创新不为评奖、不为出名,只为能打仗、打胜仗。如今,在数智赋能战训的征程上,该部还有一大批像张高工一样敢闯敢试、实干担当的先锋—— 罗博士带领一个由不同岗位官兵共同参与的软件小组,先后创新研发出多个服务于飞行训练作战的系统,助力整合飞行数据、智能评估训练质量、动态追踪飞行员状态;李高工研发战机外挂管理系统,优化挂载流程、缩短出动时间,大大提升战机快速反应能力…… “创新无大小,实用是个宝。”在该部官兵看来,能助力打赢就是对创新最大的褒奖。 从体系练兵到实战淬火,从实干担当到数智赋能,这支部队始终把打赢作为唯一追求、最大政绩。在迈向实现建军一百年奋斗目标的征程上,他们振翅凌云、步履铿锵,所有淬炼与奔赴都指向一个方向——未来战场,一击制胜。
