"How long is one second?"

When reporters recently visited a unit of the Information Support Force and posed this question to the unit's "Time Team," the answers were eye-opening——

One second—the smallest unit of time perceptible in everyday life—can be subdivided into one thousand milliseconds or one billion nanoseconds. In one second, the "Fuxing" high-speed train travels nearly 100 meters; a supercomputer can complete one quadrillion operations. In one second, the Earth travels approximately 30 kilometers in its orbit around the sun; light traverses nearly 300,000 kilometers through the cosmos……

"If you divide one second into many tiny equal parts, our work is to ensure, through research, that each of those parts is accurate and stable." Engineer Shi, head of the "Time Team," explained that in the "era of counting seconds," whether commanders are synchronizing watches before battle or missiles are locking onto targets, the importance of time precision goes without saying. Precision guidance, electronic countermeasures, system-of-systems coordination (体系协同)…… as the forms of warfare accelerate in their evolution, the demands on time precision grow ever higher, and milliseconds may determine victory or defeat on the battlefield.

Orienting toward war, conducting research for war. The unit's leadership told reporters that the "Time Team" has always maintained a spirit of urgency, focusing on independent research and development in time-precision research and applied technology, with research outcomes achieving a three-stage leap of "build—catch up—surpass." At the end of last year, the "Time Team" successfully resolved a critical technical problem, once again elevating time precision, and their research outcomes entered the first tier in the relevant field.

Engineer Shi has spent many years working deeply in the field of time-precision research, yet faced with the rapid development of frontier technologies, he often feels a "competency panic" (本领恐慌): "Technology develops with each passing day. For us, falling even slightly behind can often mean a generational gap."

More than 20 years ago, when Engineer Shi was still a captain, a news report he came across while reviewing literature—documenting the technology gap between China and the international community—struck him deeply: having technology "choked at the neck" (卡脖子) means being subject to others' control; building an independently controllable technology system is not only a matter of winning on the battlefield but concerns the future of the military. Under the guidance of a mentor, he and several comrades formed the "Time Team." Yet scientific research is a path full of thorns and unknowns, and passion alone is far from sufficient.

"At the start, almost none of the team members had a relevant professional background. Everyone brought their own skills to bear (八仙过海各显神通)—some devoured paper after paper and then verified through experiments; some pursued cross-disciplinary doctoral degrees, turning from stars in their original fields into 'newcomers'……" Recalling the pioneering journey, the members of the "Time Team" remember it vividly: the equipment was borrowed, the software was written by themselves, and the cables were connected by their own hands.

"Domestic research in this area started late, and there were no mature technologies to draw on. Everyone first conducted separate research and then gathered to discuss, often arguing until their faces turned red……" Team member Engineer Fu explained that after three years, a certain type of system they were responsible for building began to take shape. At the time, however, this achievement could only reach the baseline level within the industry.

"In order to obtain higher-precision data, we joined hands with manufacturers to tackle the problem together." Engineer Fu recounted that on one occasion, to verify the stable operating duration of the system, he and the manufacturer's technical personnel spent more than ten days holed up in a cramped, unventilated underground equipment room.

It was precisely through this kind of effort and perseverance that the "Time Team" became the first in China to achieve the engineering application of a certain piece of equipment, and also helped push the manufacturer to complete equipment optimization.

The "Time Team," which races against every second in its work, has also had moments of "wasting time." When a certain type of equipment was first put into use, it required the "Time Team" to conduct a demonstration. When most people favored choosing a time-saving, labor-saving general-purpose solution, the "Time Team" insisted on an independently designed solution. Laboratory data in the same field was being continuously updated, the new equipment was urgently awaiting a solution, and even the leadership that had always supported them grew so anxious they slammed the table: time waits for no one—why spend time on something that only makes things harder for yourselves?

"We must walk our own path. Only by using our own data can the solution be more reliable." Engineer Shi made a solemn pledge (立下军令状): the task would be completed on time.

The "Time Team" had an even deeper consideration: as technological progress and equipment iteration accelerate, a general-purpose solution can be rendered obsolete within just a few years. An independently designed solution, though time-consuming and labor-intensive, can—once successful—achieve a leap in precision and carries significant importance for the future operation and upgrading of a certain type of system.

"Regardless of whether it was early morning or late at night, the sound of keyboards clicking in the office was unceasing. On the desks, cups of tea and coffee went from hot to cold and back to hot again." Engineer Shi recalled that during that period, the members of the "Time Team" seemed to lose all sense of time, often working straight through an entire day.

Dedicated effort is never in vain. The "Time Team" delivered on time, achieving a new breakthrough in time-precision research, with their results adopted by multiple units as a baseline fallback capability.

"Research outcomes cannot be locked away in the laboratory as 'pretty data.' Making them usable and useful for the troops is our pursuit." Team member Engineer Li said that in recent years, their footprints have covered plateaus, dense forests, and island reefs, with their research outcomes playing an important role in system-of-systems training (体系练兵) and joint inter-service training.

"Isn't time just there? What do you need to do?" a soldier asked Engineer Li during one grassroots investigation visit.

"We are a group of people who study 'how long one second is,' responsible for 'racing against time and keeping pace with the era.'" Engineer Li said with a smile. He believes that as the team becomes embedded in exercises and training and plays its role, comrades will surely come to understand: within the "one second" they study, there is the instant a fighter jet takes off, the moment a shell leaves the barrel, the pulse of the troops' combat capability development, and the heartbeat of the tides of the era. This one second—its effect is in the present; its meaning is in the future.

The Vastness of "10 Nanoseconds"

A Brief History of Time writes: "In the theory of relativity there is no unique absolute time; instead each individual has his own personal measure of time, depending on where he is and how he is moving." Time came into being with the universe. If the nearly 13.8 billion years of the universe's existence were compressed into one second, then a human lifetime would amount to no more than "10 nanoseconds" of the cosmos.

Tracing the growth of the "Time Team" members, their "10 nanoseconds" have been spent in the pursuit captured by the phrase "ten thousand years is too long, seize the day and the hour" (一万年太久,只争朝夕), on the road of self-reliance and self-strengthening in science and technology, and in the struggle to continuously inject driving force into the development of the troops.

Vaster than time and space are a great cause and the breadth of the human spirit. Chairman Xi has encouraged science and technology workers across the country to deepen their patriotic sentiments, carry forward the spirit of struggle, and render meritorious service on the journey of Chinese-style modernization (中国式现代化). 信息支援部队某部研究成果实现“建成—追赶—超越”三级跳—— “时间团队”的竞速观 ■解放军报记者 贾启龙 许 敏 特约记者 张勤琳 “一秒钟有多长?” 近日,记者来到信息支援部队某部采访,向该部“时间团队”提出这个问题时,他们的回答让记者大开眼界—— 一秒钟,这个日常生活中能感知到的最小时间单位,可以被细分为一千毫秒、十亿纳秒;一秒钟,“复兴号”飞驰近100米,一台超级计算机能完成千万亿次运算;一秒钟,地球绕太阳转动约30千米,光在宇宙中穿行近30万千米…… “假如把一秒钟分成很小的若干等份,我们的工作就是通过研究,确保这每一等份又准又稳。”“时间团队”负责人史工程师介绍,在“读秒时代”,无论是指战员战前“对表”,还是导弹锁定目标,时间精度的重要性不言自明;精确制导、电子对抗、体系协同……作战形态加速演变,对时间精度要求越来越高,毫秒之间可能决定战场胜负。 向战攻坚,为战而研。该部领导告诉记者,“时间团队”始终以时不我待的精神,聚焦时间精度研究及应用技术开展自主攻关,研究成果实现“建成—追赶—超越”三级跳。去年底,“时间团队”成功解决某关键技术难题,再次提升时间精度,研究成果跻身相关领域第一梯队。 史工程师已在时间精度研究领域深耕多年,但面对前沿技术的快速发展,他时常感到“本领恐慌”:“科技发展日新月异,对于我们来说,落后一点往往可能意味着一个代际差。” 20多年前,还是上尉的史工程师在查阅文献时,一则报道国际国内技术差距的新闻令他深受触动:技术被“卡脖子”就意味着受制于人,建立自主可控的技术系统,关乎战场打赢,更关乎军队未来。在导师带领下,他和几名战友组建起“时间团队”。然而,科研是一条充满荆棘与未知的道路,仅凭一腔热血远远不够。 “刚开始,几乎所有团队成员都没有相关专业背景,大家‘八仙过海各显神通’,有的‘啃’遍论文,再实验验证;有的跨专业读博,原专业的‘骄子’转身成为‘新人’……”回忆创业历程,“时间团队”的成员们记忆犹新,设备是借来的、软件是自己写的、电缆是自己接的。 “国内相关研究起步晚,没有成熟技术可以借鉴,大家先分头研究再集中研讨,常常争论得面红耳赤……”“时间团队”成员付工程师介绍,3年后,他们负责搭建的某型系统初见雏形。然而在当时,这一成果只能达到业内基础水平。 “为了获得更高精度的数据,我们携手厂家共同攻坚。”付工程师说,一次为了验证系统稳定运行时长,他与厂家技术人员在逼仄且不通风的地下机房里“窝”了10多天。 正是凭着这样的努力和坚持,“时间团队”在国内率先实现某设备工程化应用,还助推厂家完成设备优化。 工作争分夺秒的“时间团队”,却也有“浪费时间”的时候。某型设备刚投入使用时,需由“时间团队”对其进行论证。在众人倾向于选择省时省力的通用方案时,“时间团队”却坚持自主设计方案。同领域的实验室数据一直在更新,新设备也急等着用方案,一向支持他们的领导急得拍桌子:时间不等人,何必把时间耗在“自讨苦吃”上? “我们必须走自己的路,只有用自己的数据,方案才能更可靠。”史工程师立下“军令状”:一定按时完成任务。 对此,“时间团队”还有更深层的考虑:随着技术进步和设备迭代越来越快,通用方案被淘汰就是几年间的事,而自主设计方案虽然费时费力,但一旦成功便可实现精度跃升,对某型系统未来的运行和升级有着重要意义。 “无论清晨深夜,办公室里键盘敲击声不绝于耳,办公桌上,一杯杯茶和咖啡热了又凉、凉了又热。”史工程师回忆,那段时间,“时间团队”成员仿佛对时间失去感知,常常一忙就是一整天。 功夫不负有心人。“时间团队”按时“交卷”,时间精度研究取得新突破,研究成果被多支部队列为保底手段。 “科研成果不能锁在实验室里当‘漂亮的数据’,让部队用得上、用得好才是我们的追求。”“时间团队”成员李工程师说,近年来,他们的足迹遍布高原、密林、岛礁,研究成果在体系练兵、军兵种融合训练中发挥了重要作用。 “时间不就在那里吗?你们需要做什么呢?”一次赴基层调研时,一名战士问李工程师。 “我们是一群研究‘一秒钟有多长’的人,负责‘与时间赛跑,与时代同频’。”李工程师笑着说。他相信,随着团队嵌入演训发挥作用,战友们一定会明白:在他们研究的“一秒钟”里,有战机起飞的瞬间、炮弹出膛的霎时,有部队战斗力建设的脉搏、时代浪潮的心跳。这一秒,作用在此刻,意义在未来。 记者手记 “10纳秒”的辽阔 《时间简史》中写道:“在相对论中并没有一个唯一的绝对时间,相反地,每个人都有他自己的时间测度,这依赖于他在何处并如何运动。”时间伴随着宇宙产生,如果把宇宙近138亿年的时间看作一秒,那人的一生不过是宇宙的“10纳秒”。 追寻“时间团队”成员的成长足迹,他们的“10纳秒”,在“一万年太久,只争朝夕”的求索中,在科技自立自强的道路上,在为部队发展注入汩汩动能的奋斗里。 比时空更辽阔的,是伟大的事业和人的胸怀。习主席勉励广大科技工作者厚植报国情怀,发扬奋斗精神,在中国式现代化征程上建功立业。向科技要战斗力,本质上是向科技创新人才要战斗力。高素质创新型军事人才队伍建设,呼唤每名科技工作者将个人梦想融入中国梦强军梦,不舍昼夜、一往无前,跑出奋斗强军加速度。 征途漫漫,使命催征。“时间团队”的攻坚经历告诉我们,能在伟大事业中绽放巨大潜力、探索无限可能,这何尝不是一种幸福的人生际遇?
