Why Does the "Big Guy" Soldier Sleep Curled Up?

At two in the morning, the flashlight beam of Li Ao—political instructor of a company under the recruit regiment at the People's Armed Police (PAP) Hubei General Command Training Base—froze on recruit Qiu Xinkai. Qiu, who stands 1.92 meters tall, was curled up on a 1.9-meter bunk, his feet dangling off the end.
"Xiao Qiu, can your body really recover sleeping like that? Tomorrow's training intensity is no joke." Li Ao asked quietly. Xiao Qiu sat up in a daze: "Instructor, the bunk is too short. When I lie flat, I have to bend my legs. After a while my lower back and legs go numb, and during the day when we drill formations my legs have no strength."
Qiu Xinkai's predicament is not an isolated case. Tall recruits like him are becoming more and more common at this training base. Tong Jinghua, an officer from the Political Work Office, conducted a survey and found that among recruits enlisting this year, 25 percent stand 180 centimeters or taller, and more than 5 percent exceed 190 centimeters.
As the overall physical condition of officers and soldiers in the new era has improved, the bunk length that the unit has used for many years remains 1.9 meters. For soldiers whose height exceeds the length of the bunk, knees easily slip off the side when turning over; some are forced to sleep diagonally, others have no choice but to keep their legs bent all night. After prolonged "making do," many tall recruits have developed lumbar and back muscle strain and compressive numbness in the legs, directly affecting their concentration and movement execution during daytime training, and increasing errors on the training ground.
Insufficient bunk length is only one of the problems. With the base leadership's approval, Tong Jinghua conducted a survey of the sleep conditions of all officers and soldiers in the recruit regiment. The results were troubling: many reported poor sleep quality, and 5.8 percent of officers and soldiers had varying degrees of sleep disorders—difficulty falling asleep, waking easily during the night, and being unable to fall back asleep after early waking.
Recruit Xiao Chen is one of that 5.8 percent. Because of strained family relations, his mother would nag every time she called. "During the day I don't dare let my mind wander during training, but the moment I lie down at night, my head is full of it." Xiao Chen said, his eyes red. He often tossed and turned until the early hours before drifting off, and sometimes when he woke in the night he could not close his eyes again. This persistent sleep deprivation caused him to react sluggishly and suffer impaired judgment during high-demand training events such as apparatus exercises. Squad cadres noticed him zoning out on multiple occasions; once he nearly fell off the apparatus.
Recruit Xiao Zhang's problem is training pressure. He had been physically weak since childhood, and his physical fitness assessment scores have consistently ranked at the bottom since enlisting. "Every time I see my squadmates all passing and I'm the only one dragging everyone down, I get so anxious I can't sleep. Lying in the bunk at night, I go over the key movement points again and again in my head, and the more I think the more awake I become." Xiao Zhang said that on several occasions he woke at two or three in the morning and could not get back to sleep, lying awake until the morning exercise bugle sounded. This severely hampered the pace of his training progress.
Recruit Meng Fanhao stands 1.88 meters tall—the bunk length was already barely adequate for him—and occasional bouts of homesickness compounded the problem, leaving him with poor sleep since entering the barracks. "Sometimes I've just dozed off and the sound of footsteps from the changing of the guard wakes me up again. Once awake, I can't get back to sleep, and I toss and turn until dawn." Chronic insufficient rest left him recovering slowly after high-intensity training, with fatigue accumulating.
Cadres and senior soldiers observed a clear chain reaction: recruits who slept poorly showed noticeably slower reactions during training, distorted tactical movements, declining physical endurance, and more volatile emotions. One squad leader said: "One soldier, because of prolonged poor sleep, saw his training scores slide and his temper become especially irritable. This affected not only him personally but also the atmosphere and training efficiency of the whole squad. It made me extremely anxious!"
"We cannot only see soldiers' bodies curled up—we must also see their 'curled-up' hearts, and see the potential drain on training readiness and combat effectiveness behind all of this." Li Ao said candidly at one meeting: "The short bunk is the surface manifestation; the heavy burden of personal worries is the underlying cause; stress and other factors are all sources of interference. Ensuring effective sleep is an indispensable foundational link in the chain of combat effectiveness generation (战斗力生成链条)."
The survey results drew close attention from the base Party committee. "Sleep problems directly affect recruits' physical and mental health and training quality and efficiency—they are problems that must be urgently resolved." They have compiled the situation and reported it up to the General Command headquarters, and have begun making targeted adjustments within existing conditions: attempting to temporarily extend bunks by splicing them together for individual soldiers of extreme height; requiring senior soldiers to strengthen nighttime rounds and promptly conduct heart-to-heart talks with those found tossing and turning; coordinating psychological service personnel to enter the barracks and provide counseling; and optimizing nighttime inspection rounds and guard-relief handover procedures to minimize disturbances to the maximum extent and protect officers' and soldiers' rest and recovery time.
"These are stopgap measures; resolving the root problem requires top-level design (顶层设计)." A headquarters officer noted after conducting research: "For example, do bunk standards need to be scientifically adjusted in response to changes in officers' and soldiers' physiques? How can psychological service resources be delivered more precisely to the soldiers whose training readiness is affected? How should standards for sleep environment assurance in field encampments and aboard vessel units be established? These questions require systematic, combat-oriented consideration at the level of institutional mechanisms."
Once again it is late at night, and Li Ao walks through the silent barracks. In the faint beam of his flashlight, there are still soldiers tossing and turning. Enabling these young soldiers to sleep soundly is the responsibility of those who lead troops. Clearly identifying the crux of what affects combat effectiveness, and beginning to think and act for the effective recovery of officers and soldiers—this itself is an "awakening" (觉醒) that concerns the efficient conversion of support capability (保障力) into combat effectiveness.
Paying Attention to Problems "Hidden in the Bunk"

Deep in the night, when the lights-out bugle sounds, the night of the barracks returns to stillness. That stillness is the starting point for recuperating strength and gathering momentum (养精蓄锐、蓄势待发).
Not long ago, senior leaders of the PAP Hubei General Command, while conducting in-depth grassroots research, keenly identified the real-world difficulties "hidden in the bunk." These seemingly minor inconveniences, accumulated over time, continuously drain officers' and soldiers' energy, lower training standards, and increase safety hazards, becoming "wear points" (磨损点) in combat effectiveness generation.
This combat effectiveness investigation report on "sleep" sent ripples spreading without end. Combined with the ongoing study and education campaign on establishing and practicing a correct view of political achievements (正确政绩观), a discussion unfolded around the questions of "for whom political achievements are built, what kind of political achievements to build, and how to build political achievements." "Officers' and soldiers' bodies able to stretch out fully, efficient recovery, and a vigorous state of participation in training are the cornerstone supporting the ability to fight and win wars"; "The political achievements of leading cadres must ultimately be reflected in the improvement of the unit's combat effectiveness, and ensuring that officers and soldiers 'sleep well' and recover effectively is an important link in improving combat effectiveness"…
Starting from this small bunk, the General Command launched across its subordinate units a warm-hearted action (暖心行动) for scientific sleep assurance that strikes directly at grassroots pain points, aligns with actual combat needs, and is aimed at the orientation of winning battles.
In the Prefabricated Barracks
The "Lengthened" Bunk, Connected to Officers' and Soldiers' Well-Being
At six in the morning, thin mist hangs like gauze over the Three Gorges Dam. In the barracks of a company of the PAP Hubei General Command Yichang Detachment, before the reveille bugle has even sounded, Sergeant Gao Xingyong has already woken naturally from sleep. He stretches his arms wide, extends his legs straight, and his feet rest easily on the surface of the bunk—his whole body radiating the looseness of full relaxation.
Just over three months ago, sleep was not easy for Gao Xingyong, who stands 1.88 meters tall. The company is stationed in the core guard zone of the Three Gorges Dam. The three white-walled, red-roofed prefabricated buildings where they live are barracks left over from the Three Gorges Project construction workers, and officers and soldiers have lived in them for nearly 20 years. Space in the prefabricated buildings is limited and the dormitory layout is compact; the old-style single wooden beds inside measure 1.9 meters long and 0.9 meters wide. This standard size, which was adequate in the past, has gradually revealed its shortcomings in providing for the post-2000 generation of officers and soldiers, who are well-nourished and tall.
Gao Xingyong is the company's famously large soldier. When he lay down on the old-style bunk, the soles of his feet would press against the footboard with no room to spare, and he would frequently be jolted awake in the middle of the night by numbness, soreness, and unbearable swelling in his legs and feet. "Back then, my body couldn't stretch out while sleeping, and my muscles were actually more tense after resting." Gao Xingyong said, running his hand over the brand-new bunk, recalling the past.
A bunk that doesn't "fit" not only fails to allow officers and soldiers to effectively recover their physical strength during rest—it actually aggravates physical wear and tear, eroding the unit's combat effectiveness day by day. These easily overlooked details were precisely identified when General Command leaders conducted their research. The Party committee reached consensus: absolutely not (绝不) allow objectively existing support shortfalls to affect officers' and soldiers' physical recovery; absolutely not (绝不) allow sleep problems to become a stumbling block to combat effectiveness.
Soon, custom-made 2.1-meter extended bunks, precisely calculated according to officers' and soldiers' heights, were delivered in succession to grassroots units, and the bed boards were also upgraded. But a new problem emerged: the existing mattresses and pads did not match the new bunks in size—they came up short when spread on the new bunks, and officers and soldiers still could not get adequate rest.
Upon discovering this detail, each unit again contacted manufacturers to simultaneously order mattresses and pads fully matched to the extended bunk dimensions, confirming every detail from fabric thickness to stitching workmanship, to ensure that every detail served the effective recovery of officers and soldiers.
"My feet can stretch out straight, my body can fully relax, my concentration on guard duty the next day is sharper, my posture is more upright, and my observation is more acute!" Gao Xingyong patted the "lengthened" bunk, his eyes bright. He said that standing guard at the Three Gorges Dam post, he represents the image of the PAP, and only with sufficient rest and recovery can he guard this "great national asset" (大国重器) in his best condition.
In response to the special duty schedule of guard detachments—day-night reversal and fragmented rest—the company also simultaneously created a "blackout sleep zone," installing thickened blackout curtains on dormitory windows and setting up red-and-blue dual-color low-light guide lamps, so that officers and soldiers can be in a quiet, dark environment even at midday and obtain more efficient deep sleep.
At the same time, a "guard-call buffer system" (叫哨缓冲系统) was fully implemented throughout the barracks, replacing the abrupt method of direct radio calls. The duty room first illuminates a soft bedside light, giving officers and soldiers a 3-minute buffer to wake gradually, before a sentinel gently taps them awake. This completely eliminates the heart rate disruption and discomfort caused by being suddenly jolted out of deep sleep, ensuring that every precious period of rest maximally restores physical and mental energy.
On the Waves
"Anchoring" Deep Sleep, Stabilizing Combat Effectiveness on the Water
Leaving the Three Gorges dam area and traveling downstream along the Yangtze, one reaches a vessel detachment of the PAP Hubei General Command Wuhan Detachment. Officers and soldiers here are stationed year-round on the Yangtze River, carrying out missions including waterborne patrol and control, emergency rescue and relief, and protection of important targets. The vessels are both their battle stations and their home day and night. The bunks of vessel detachments are perpetually rocking and swaying with the river currents. Ensuring effective sleep in this special environment is critical to maintaining sustained waterborne combat capability.
Mechanical engineer soldier Chen Yulong still clearly remembers the embarrassment and ordeal of his first night after joining the unit as a new recruit. His dormitory was located in the forward section of the pontoon vessel; the interior space was cramped, and when Chen Yulong lay down on the bunk he could only press tightly on his side with his legs curled up. River waves slapped the hull one after another, the vessel swayed from side to side, and his head would periodically bang against the bulkhead, waves of dizziness and pressure washing over him. That night he vomited three times in succession; the oppressive feeling of the confined space and the discomfort of the vessel's violent rocking intertwined, making effective rest completely impossible.
"Sleeping on a vessel is really like fighting a battle that never ends." Political Instructor Tang Wei led the author, ducking, into the ship's cabin. The narrow passageway allowed only one person to pass; pipes and cables crisscrossed overhead; the roar of machinery from the vessel alongside was deafening.
After the vessel's main engines start, noise inside the pontoon can reach above 90 decibels. The frames of the old-style bunks were not tightly connected to the hull; when the vessel rocked, the bunks would emit creaking friction sounds, which soldiers jokingly called the "wave lullaby" (浪花摇篮曲).
Falling asleep on the waves is not romantic. Extreme spatial compression, continuous noise interference, and irregular vessel motion—the three factors combined severely constrained the rest and recovery efficiency of vessel unit officers and soldiers, affecting their readiness for waterborne missions.
How to carve out, within a pitching and rolling ship's cabin, a "pressure-stabilizing compartment" (稳压舱) where officers and soldiers could sleep soundly and efficiently recover their physical strength became the key assault task of this warm-hearted support initiative.
Facing spatial limitations, the detachment took the lead in conducting modular renovation of the pontoon vessel, maximally expanding the interior activity space; scientifically extending bunk length to resolve the problem of tall officers and soldiers being unable to stretch out; installing soundproofing doors in some berthing compartments and affixing new composite damping soundproofing felt to portions of compartment walls.
Walking into the renovated compartment and gently closing the soundproofing door, the roar from outside is instantly blocked out, leaving only the vessel's faint low-frequency vibration. At the same time, officers and soldiers were uniformly equipped with dedicated sleep-assist headsets at their bunks, building a silent barrier protecting deep sleep.
Countering vessel motion is the most central challenge of the vessel sleep reform. The General Command specially invited civilian ergonomics experts to board the vessel for on-site research, and combined with the characteristics of vessel motion patterns in Yangtze River waters, applied professional techniques to adjust the orientation of the pontoon vessel. When the hull sways with the river currents, it can rapidly absorb lateral thrust, providing stable, conforming support for officers and soldiers sleeping in the compartments.
Chen Yulong lay down on the retrofitted bunk; even though the vessel still rocked, his body could remain basically stable. "Before, it took a long time to recover after coming off night watch. Now, with adequate rest, I react faster and feel more confident when responding to sudden waterborne tasks." He said.
In the Tents
Precision Support—Refusing "Needless Attrition" in the Field
The night is ink-black; insects chirp softly in the grass. On a field training ground in a hilly area near the garrison of the PAP Hubei General Command Huanggang Detachment, several camouflage tents are scattered in staggered formation, connected in the night into a neat square array. The seemingly tranquil encampment conceals the challenges that mobile detachment officers and soldiers face in ensuring effective rest under realistic combat conditions.
Soldier Xie Yanjie pointed at the squad field tent in front of him and said helplessly: "The ground outside is uneven; the folding field cots set up on it wobble and shake. After getting up, my lower back aches, which directly affects tactical movements and cross-country endurance during the day."
Even harder to bear is the need to keep one's combat-readiness nerves constantly taut. In mobile detachments, field training is the norm. Even when lying down to rest, officers' and soldiers' nerves remain in a state of semi-tension, making it difficult to enter deep sleep for efficient recovery.
The General Command Party committee discovered during research that the phenomena of "non-combat attrition" (非战斗减员) among field training units—lumbar muscle strain, decreased immunity, and sluggish reactions caused by insufficient rest and poor sleep quality—cannot be ignored, and have become an "invisible killer" (隐形杀手) weakening detachments' sustained combat capability.
As modern military missions become increasingly complex and diverse, officers' and soldiers' sustained combat capability in special battlefield environments cannot be separated from scientific and efficient physical and mental recovery support. The Party committee further unified its thinking: resolving objectively existing support shortfalls does not negate the "spirit of enduring hardship" (吃苦精神)—it refuses "needless attrition" (无谓的消耗). It is not the pursuit of comfort, but the assurance of efficient recovery. This is an inherent requirement of scientific troop leadership and precision support, and a practical measure for concentrating limited energy on the critical links of training troops and preparing for war.
As the warm-hearted support initiative advanced, the author saw centrally procured and distributed mattresses whose length and width matched the folding cots. Spread on the folding cot before sleep, they both reduce pressure on the lumbar spine caused by an overly soft sleeping surface and effectively block ground cold and dampness, reducing non-combat attrition from soldiers falling ill due to cold exposure—a measure that has been universally welcomed by officers and soldiers.
"The command post members of the training site proactively moved into tents and left the camping vehicles for us." Xie Yanjie pointed to the camping vehicle system beside the tent, explaining that the detachment makes rational use of the camping vehicle bunks to ensure that officers and soldiers with special rest needs—those of extreme height or with physical ailments—all receive an appropriate berth.
Xie Yanjie demonstrated on the spot the assembly and adjustment of the camping vehicle system bunk; in just a few minutes, a spacious sleeping surface was set up. "The bed frame is rock-steady, and my lower back and back feel much more comfortable! With adequate rest, the 5-kilometer armed cross-country run and special operations training events feel like I have more physical reserves and can give everything I've got." He said.
In response to gradually intensifying heat, high temperatures during field training, and rampant insects, higher-level authorities distributed high-density mosquito nets to officers and soldiers; some units also received shade netting canopies; and long-acting, environmentally friendly insect repellent is regularly sprayed around the encampment perimeter, creating a rest environment conducive to recovery.
Hardware upgrades laid the foundation for sleep; building a sense of psychological security allowed field sleep to truly become settled and peaceful. Each evening before lights out, the encampment sets aside a half-hour psychological buffer period during which officers and soldiers can listen to soothing music, write training diaries or duty reflections, and allow taut nerves to gradually relax in a controlled environment.
One by one, sleep-assistance measures focused on actual combat needs have effectively alleviated the accumulation of fatigue during field training. Soldiers lying on stable, spacious bunks relax their bodies, obtain more adequate rest, and ensure they can throw themselves into high-intensity training tasks the next day with a fuller state of readiness and more abundant physical strength.

Expanding on the Optimization of a Single Bunk

The optimization of a bunk, the upgrade of a support measure, is a breakthrough move (破题之举) responding to the bottlenecks constraining combat effectiveness generation, and an vivid practice of establishing and implementing a correct view of political achievements (正确政绩观). A warm-hearted sleep assurance action that strikes directly at soldiers' hearts, with the quiet power of nourishing things imperceptibly (润物无声), resolves the urgent, difficult, worrying, and long-awaited problems of grassroots officers and soldiers, and delivers organizational care to the finest details.
Adequate sleep and efficient recovery are important guarantees for soldiers to maintain optimal physiological condition, sustain sharp cognitive ability, and improve adaptability in complex environments. Grassroots officers and soldiers sleep with their weapons at the ready (枕戈待旦) and move at the sound of orders, constantly operating at the high-intensity tempo of combat readiness duty, training, and exercises. Fully and efficiently resting is by no means a trivial personal matter of no consequence—it is a key element in sustaining physical and mental health, ensuring training quality and efficiency, and supporting the fulfillment of the mission.
The PAP Hubei General Command, through precise identification and scientific policy measures to optimize officers' and soldiers' sleep conditions, has effectively eliminated these unnecessary losses, enabling officers and soldiers to restore physical strength, adjust their mental state, and accumulate energy through adequate rest, and to invest in combat readiness training with a better state and higher efficiency—achieving the efficiency conversion of "support capability reaching directly to combat effectiveness" (保障力直达战斗力).
At present, the entire military is intensively pushing realistic combat training, with training intensity, difficulty, and risk continuously increasing. Against this backdrop, using refined support to eliminate non-combat attrition and enable officers and soldiers to invest in training troops and preparing for war in their optimal physical and mental condition is a concrete embodiment of extracting combat effectiveness from training and extracting combat effectiveness from management. From "sleeping well" to winning wars, the war-winning logic of the deep integration of support capability and combat effectiveness in the modern military enlightens us: only when grassroots support more precisely interfaces with actual combat needs and more effectively serves combat effectiveness generation can the "string" of officers and soldiers sleeping with their weapons at the ready (枕戈待旦) be drawn tighter, and the "arrow" poised to be released fly farther.
