This is a political work commentary published under the 'Strong Military Forum' (强军论坛) column, profiling Wang Ji, a high-assurance software researcher at the National University of Defense Technology's College of Computer Science, alongside CETC No. 14 Research Institute academician Ben De and 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' figure Yu Min, to illustrate the PLA's current ideological standard of 'purity' (纯粹度) for military scientific research workers. The piece documents how the PLA frames the motivational and ethical formation of its defense-science workforce — subordinating personal ambition to Party, state, and military interest — at a moment when official discourse is pressing military researchers to accelerate 'hard-core' (硬核) innovation outputs. Its value is as a record of the ideological register the institution uses to address retention, vocation, and loyalty among technical cadres, not as evidence of a policy or capability shift.

Studying the exemplary deeds of Wang Ji, a researcher at the College of Computer Science of the National University of Defense Technology, one is always moved by his purity. We all know that Wang Ji is engaged in high-assurance software research and naturally understands algorithmic principles. In his professional work, he always strives to achieve the optimal solution. But in him there is also a higher-order algorithm for life itself: "reduce complexity to its minimum, raise purity to its maximum."

Chairman Xi has pointed out that one must "forge the political character of absolute loyalty to the Party, hold high the spiritual disposition of idealism, maintain a clear and tranquil mind (心境澄明) and a vigorous and flourishing inner strength (心力茁壮), so that people can sense at first encounter the clarity and purity that young cadres should possess." What is purity? It means that, having been tempered by wind and rain, one's heart remains singularly focused and undistracted—faith unmixed with impurities, pursuits free of vainglory, work free of self-interest—striving to be untainted by a single speck of dust, wholeheartedly devoted to the public good, and upright in every respect, pouring all one's thoughts and energy into one's work and undertakings. The higher the degree of purity in military scientific research workers, the more they are able to serve the greater public good, uphold the greater righteousness, and seek the greater self, always placing the interests of the Party, the state, and the military first, and striving to achieve the maximum value and optimal solution in both worth and accomplishment.

Struck down by illness, losing both legs, at the darkest moment of his life, Wang Ji nonetheless saw "another side": "Fortunately my brain is intact and my hands can still move—from now on I can free up more time for research." In Wang Ji's mind, he arrived at a new "algorithm" for disability: "I've cut out the commute, filtered away irrelevant socializing, and in return gained a purer academic time and space." In his students' eyes, Wang Ji has turned his life into a minimalist system, treating every obstacle as a bug to be debugged and thus converting it into "a solvable problem." This is Wang Ji's purity.

The facts prove that for scientists like Wang Ji, the higher the degree of purity, the stronger the sense of vocation, and the richer the achievements become.

Chen Liquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Physics and a recipient of the State Supreme Science and Technology Award, made a cross-field career change at the age of 36 and ran hard down the track of lithium battery research, for the reason that "this is of great significance to China's future energy development." He believes that "as long as the state needs it, no matter how arduous the road, one must keep walking." Ben De, an academician at the No. 14 Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and a recipient of the State Supreme Science and Technology Award, devoted his entire life to the research and development of radar technology. When the state urgently needed airborne radar, Ben De resolutely accepted the mission. As the technical lead, Ben De flew on nearly every test flight. He said: "If you don't go up yourself, you'll never know where the problem really lies." After the mission was completed, Ben De's health collapsed, and it took him several years of illness before he gradually recovered. It is precisely because these scientists are indifferent to fame and gain, pure and clear in character, vigorously carry forward the spirit of scientists (科学家精神), and "join the surging torrent of those who dedicate themselves," that our country has been able to continuously scale the world's peaks of science and technology.

"Do earth-shaking deeds, be a person whose name goes unrecorded." Yu Min, a "Two Bombs, One Satellite" (两弹一星) meritorious figure whose name disappeared from public record for 28 years, said: "A person's name will sooner or later fade away. To be able to merge one's meager strength into the cause of a strong nation is satisfaction enough." Indeed, scientific and technological innovation is arduous work, a pioneering undertaking, requiring effort a hundred or a thousand times greater than that of ordinary people. Without lofty ideals and convictions, and lacking a pure and noble character, it is very difficult to lead and stay ahead. Scientists like Wang Ji are able to endure what ordinary people cannot endure, do what ordinary people cannot do, and achieve what ordinary people cannot achieve—the most powerful engine is the force of patriotism, and the most solid support is the constant preservation of one's own pure heart. Especially today, when the scientific-technological revolution and the military revolution are advancing with tremendous speed, possessing more innovative results requires all the more that military scientific research workers preserve their original aspiration for research (科研初心), resolve to forge a shield for the nation, and continuously raise their own degree of purity.

To raise the degree of purity to its highest, the most fundamental thing is to learn to calculate accounts, and to be skilled at calculating the big account. Wang Ji often says, "Calculating the small account is easy to get stuck; calculating the big account is what brings good fortune," and "Calculate the big account, think about big matters, and a person becomes purer and more focused." Wang Ji's students evaluate him this way: "He carries in his heart a world far larger than himself—that is why those hardships never swallowed him." For military scientific research workers to learn from Wang Ji is to follow his example: calculate more with the big abacus and the big account, less with the small abacus and the small account; think through problems and advance work from the standpoint of the interests of the Party, the state, and the military; cultivate more of the magnanimity of "success need not come in my time" and the sense of responsibility of "success will certainly come with my contribution"; genuinely produce "hard-core" (硬核) achievements; and ensure that the mission is not dishonored and the trust is not betrayed.

学习国防科技大学计算机学院研究员王戟的先进事迹,总是感动于他的纯粹。 我们都知道,王戟从事的是高可信软件研究,自然是懂算法原理。在专业算法上,他总是力争实现最优解。但在他身上,还有一种关于生命的高级算法,那就是“把复杂度降到最低,把纯粹度提到最高”。 习主席指出,要“铸牢对党忠诚的政治品格,高扬理想主义的精神气质,心境澄明,心力茁壮,让人迎面就能感受到年轻干部应有的清澈和纯粹”。何为纯粹?就是历经风雨洗礼,内心始终目标专一、心无旁骛,信仰不掺杂质,追求不慕虚名,干事不含私心,努力做到一尘不染、一心为公、一身正气,把全部心思和精力倾注到干事创业上来。军队科研工作者的纯粹度越高,就越能做到为大公、守大义、求大我,始终把党、国家和军队的利益放在第一位,努力追求价值和业绩的最大值和最优解。 病魔突袭,失去双腿,人生至暗时刻,王戟却看到了“另一面”:“幸好脑袋没坏,手还能动,以后可以腾出更多时间做研究了。”在王戟心中,他对残疾有了新的“算法”:“省了通勤奔波,滤掉了无关社交,反而得到了更纯粹的学术时空。”在学生眼中,王戟把生活过成了一个极简系统,把每一个障碍都当作可解决的bug去调试,进而转化为“可解决的问题”。这就是王戟的纯粹。 事实证明,对王戟那样的科学家而言,纯粹度越高,事业感越强,成就也会越来越丰厚。 国家最高科学技术奖获得者、中国科学院物理研究所陈立泉院士,36岁跨界转行,在锂电池赛道上奋力奔跑,原因就是“这对中国未来的能源发展意义重大。”他认为,“只要国家需要,再艰难的路,也要走下去。”国家最高科学技术奖获得者、中国电子科技集团第十四研究所贲德院士,一辈子为雷达技术研究拼搏奉献。国家急需机载雷达,贲德坚决领受任务。作为技术负责人,贲德几乎全程跟飞试验。他说:“不上去就不知道问题到底出在哪。”任务完成后,贲德的身体垮了,病了好几年才逐渐好转。正是因为这些科学家不计名利、纯粹清澈,大力弘扬科学家精神,“加入献身者的滚滚洪流中”,我国才能不断攀登世界科技高峰。 “干惊天动地事,做隐姓埋名人。”名字消失28年、“两弹一星”元勋于敏说:“一个人的名字,早晚是要消失的,能把自己微薄的力量融进强国的事业之中,也就足以欣慰了。”的确,科技创新是一项艰苦的工作,是一项开拓的事业,需要付出超出常人百倍千倍的努力。如果没有崇高的理想信念,缺少纯粹的高尚品格,是很难做到领跑领先的。像王戟那样的科学家,之所以能忍常人不能忍,做常人不能做,成常人不能成,最强大的引擎就是爱国力量,最有力的支撑就是始终保持自己的纯粹心。特别是在科技革命和军事革命迅猛发展的今天,要拥有更多创新成果,更加需要军队科研工作者保持科研初心,立志为国铸盾,不断提高自己的纯粹度。 把纯粹度提到最高,最根本的就是要学会算账,善于算大账。王戟常说,“算小账容易卡壳,算大账才能走运”“算大账、想大事,人会更纯粹、更专注”。王戟的学生评价他:“他心里装着一个远比自己大的世界,那些苦难才没有吞没他。”军队科研工作者向王戟学习,就要像他那样多打大算盘、算大账,少打小算盘、算小账,立足于党、国家和军队利益思考问题、推进工作,多些“功成不必在我”的气度胸怀和“功成必定有我”的责任担当,切实创造出“硬核”政绩,做到不辱使命、不负重托。
