On August 18, Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta met in Dili with Chinese Minister of National Defense Dong Jun, who was on an official visit.
Horta said that he is grateful for the long-term support and assistance China has provided since Timor-Leste's independence, and expressed hope that the two militaries would further deepen and expand practical cooperation. Timor-Leste firmly adheres to the one-China policy and opposes any country's interference in China's internal affairs. The South China Sea issue should be resolved by the parties concerned through bilateral negotiations, and Timor-Leste is willing to work together with China and other countries in the region to make the South China Sea a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation.
Dong Jun conveyed the warm regards of President Xi Jinping and extended sincere congratulations on the anniversary of the Timor-Leste National Liberation Armed Forces (Falintil). Dong Jun said that the leaders of the two countries have reached a series of important consensuses on developing China-Timor-Leste relations, propelling bilateral relations into the best period in history. This first-ever visit by a Chinese Minister of National Defense to Timor-Leste is aimed at deepening strategic mutual trust between the two militaries, elevating the level of defense cooperation, and providing strong support for the building of a China-Timor-Leste community with a shared future (命运共同体). China appreciates Timor-Leste's adherence to strategic autonomy, its upholding of fairness and justice, and its steadfast support for Timor-Leste's national defense and military development. We are willing to work together with Timor-Leste to strengthen strategic coordination, improve the quality and effectiveness of cooperation, and advance the two militaries' relationship to a new level.
During the visit, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão held a welcome ceremony for Dong Jun and conducted formal talks.
