A summer military port, steaming with heat.

Near the shore, the seawater is clear and translucent as jade. Sunlight pierces straight through the water column, casting dazzling patches of light on the surface.

Where the blue waves surge and roll, the sound of wooden oars rising and falling rings out vigorously. Officers and soldiers pull hard at their oars as several sampans advance rapidly across the sea.

A sampan is a small wooden boat of simple construction. Sampan training in our military traces its origins to the arduous early years of the People's Navy and has a history spanning several decades. At that time, our military used sampan training to consolidate the foundational seamanship of officers and soldiers, rapidly close the gap in naval personnel shortfalls, and support coastal defense missions. The naval officers and soldiers of that era had no advanced propulsion equipment; the sampan was not merely a means of maritime transportation but an important platform on which officers and soldiers carried out combat missions. Propelled by human oar-power, naval officers and soldiers drove sampans through wind and waves to guard the maritime frontier — from coastal defense to inshore patrol — silently protecting the security of the sea boundary.

Through the changes of the times, naval vessel equipment has been iteratively upgraded, and modern warships now race across the open ocean; mechanical propulsion long ago replaced human oar-power. Yet sampan training has not faded from the naval training system.

Sampan training not only forges officers' and soldiers' ability to row across the sea through wind and waves, but is also a comprehensive training exercise that tempers endurance, physical strength, and willpower. Today, officers and soldiers conducting sampan training are not only inheriting the fighting spirit of their predecessors but also subjecting themselves to a test of the foundational physical fitness required for actual combat.

A sampan measuring 9.5 meters in length and 2.8 meters in width is operated by 1 helmsman, 12 oarsmen, and 1 lookout working in coordination. The wooden oars in the hands of officers and soldiers are more than 3 meters long and weigh 7 kilograms. Crossing wave-swept waters by human power alone places extremely high demands on muscular endurance and cardiopulmonary function. During the rowing process, wind, waves, and ocean currents continuously drain the physical strength of officers and soldiers, while scorching summer heat and the biting salt wind steadily wear down their physical condition; the slightest lapse can affect the overall speed of advance.

Sampan training places very high physical demands on officers and soldiers, with upper-body strength being especially important — the shoulder, back, and arm muscle groups must be capable of continuously driving the oars against the resistance of the waves. In addition, the core muscle groups of the waist and abdomen must be engaged to stabilize the body during rowing, so as to maintain balance on a pitching sampan.

Officers and soldiers must supplement their daily training with upper-body, lower-body, and core strength work, and conduct intensive training focused on endurance and resistance to seasickness, in order to adapt to long-distance unpowered rowing at sea. Staff Sergeant Second Class Zhang Xin is known among his comrades as "Iron Waist-and-Back," yet when he first began sampan training, after rowing 10 nautical miles his lower back ached so badly he could not straighten up, he could not put force into his oar strokes, and his technique broke down noticeably in the second half. His coach identified the problem: weak core strength — sampan rowing requires not just arm power, but the waist and back are the central conduit for force transmission. To address this, he added a "core triple set" to his own training: barbell bent-over rows, 3 sets of 8 repetitions each, with weight gradually increasing from 40 kilograms to 60 kilograms, to train the pulling strength of the latissimus dorsi and the coordinated engagement of the posterior chain; deadlifts, 3 sets of 8 repetitions each, starting from 60 kilograms and slowly building to 120 kilograms, to reinforce the rigid support of the quadratus lumborum and erector spinae; and supine cross-body reaches, alternating left and right for 10 repetitions each side for 3 sets total, to improve the stable control of the core muscle groups under dynamic conditions. For the first two weeks, he felt his waist and back were as stiff as an iron plate after every session; after one month, results began to show — over a 20-nautical-mile long row, his technique remained unbroken through the second half. "Before, my arms would give out first. Now my waist and back deliver the force steadily, and my arms just execute." As training continued, Zhang Xin grew increasingly at ease.

During long-duration, high-intensity rowing training, blisters on the hands became routine. The calluses on the hands of Staff Sergeant First Class Yu Zhiying are training marks he wears with pride. Many trainees participating for the first time found their arms aching and their lower backs stiffening after rowing just a few nautical miles, with blisters worn into their palms by the oar handles. When the older generation of naval officers and soldiers rowed sampans on operational missions, they kept swinging their oars for dozens of consecutive hours, holding their positions even as their physical reserves ran dry. The training scenes of today are a faithful reflection of the actual combat missions of that era.

Seasickness is also a formidable adversary for officers and soldiers in sampan training. When encountering stretches of turbulent current or strong headwinds, even when officers and soldiers row with full force, the sampan can sometimes be caught by an undercurrent and spin in place. With their efforts blocked and their physical reserves spent, officers and soldiers bear the dual pressure of body and mind.

At such moments, officers and soldiers must keep their core muscle groups tensed at all times to counter the hull's constant rocking from the surge. Private Ma Kaijun had always longed for the sea, yet suffered severe seasickness. On his first open-water training exercise, he vomited as soon as they set out, his face turning pale. His teammates urged him to turn back, but he waved them off: "I can't let a little wind and waves beat me." Back on shore, he went to the balance bridge and, under the guidance of his squad leader, practiced balance on a rocking board. It took him a full two weeks to go from being unable to stand steady to being able to simulate rowing motions while the board swayed beneath him. On another open-water training exercise, with sea state three, the bow being slapped around by the swells, Ma Kaijun's hands gripped the oar with veins standing out, his voice calling out in time with the helmsman's cadence. Over a distance of 25 nautical miles, he and his comrades completed the course successfully.

The sampan is a test of strength and willpower, and also a struggle of solidarity and unity — pulling together in the same boat. No matter how strong a single person is, he cannot row a boat alone; but when 14 people are of one mind, with oar cadence consistent, entry angle consistent, and the moment of force application consistent, that 3-ton sampan can skim swiftly across the surface of the water. Zhang Xin said: "The sampan taught me that while you entrust your back to your comrades, you must also be worthy of their trust." Ma Kaijun's takeaway was more plain-spoken: "Before, I thought there were things I couldn't hold out through. Now I believe I can grit my teeth and push past them."

Wind and waves rise suddenly, surging and crashing. A single leaf on the water, riding the wind and chasing the waves. Warriors never fear wind and waves; no matter how harsh the environment, they can rely on courage, strength, and wisdom to struggle valiantly against wind, waves, and peril……

As the sun set in the west, a four-hour open-water sampan training exercise came to an end. Ma Kaijun and his comrades shouldered their oars together and returned to the barracks in high spirits.

扁舟一叶 驭风逐浪 ■申建波 解放军报记者 马 晶 南部战区海军某训练基地官兵进行舢板训练。何张洋摄 夏日军港,暑气蒸腾。 近岸,海水清透如翡翠,阳光直直地穿透水层,在海面上投下耀眼的光斑。 碧波翻涌处,木桨起落声声激扬。官兵奋力摇桨,几条舢板在海面上快速前行。 舢板,是一种结构简单的小型木板船。我军的舢板训练,起源于人民海军初创的峥嵘岁月,距今已有数十年的历史。当时,我军通过舢板训练夯实官兵基础航海能力,快速补齐海军人才短板,支撑近岸防御任务。彼时的海军官兵,没有先进的动力装备,舢板不仅是一种海上交通工具,更是官兵遂行作战任务的重要依托。靠着人力划桨,海军官兵驾驭舢板闯风浪、守海疆,从沿岸守备到近海巡航,默默守护海疆安全。 历经时代变迁,舰艇装备迭代升级,如今现代化战舰驰骋大洋,机械动力早已取代人力划桨,可舢板训练并未淡出海军训练体系。 舢板训练不仅练就官兵在风浪中驾舟渡海的能力,更是一场淬炼耐力、体力与意志的综合训练。如今官兵进行舢板训练,不仅是对先辈奋斗精神的传承,更是对实战基础体能的检验。 一条长9.5米,宽2.8米的舢板,由1名舵手、12名桨手和1名观察员协同发力。官兵手中的木质船桨有3米多长,重达7公斤,依靠人力横渡风浪海域,对肌肉耐力、心肺功能提出了极高要求。在划行过程中,风浪、洋流还会持续消耗官兵体能,酷暑高温、咸涩海风也会不断损耗身体状态,稍有松懈就可能影响整体的行进速度。 舢板训练对官兵体能要求很高,上肢力量尤为重要,肩背、手臂肌群需能持续驱动木桨,对抗海浪阻力。此外,在划行时还需依靠腰腹等核心肌群稳定身体,才能在颠簸的舢板上保持平衡。 官兵日常需要加练上肢、下肢和核心力量,并围绕耐力、抗晕船能力等进行强化训练,才能适应在海上的长距离无动力划行训练。二级上士张鑫被战友们称为“钢铁腰背”,可刚开始舢板训练时,他划10海里腰就酸得直不起来,拉桨用不上力,后半程出现明显的动作变形。教练指出,他的问题在于核心力量弱——舢板划桨不光需要手臂发力,腰背才是力量传导的中枢。为此,他给自己加练“核心三件套”:杠铃俯身划船,每次3组,每组8次,重量从40公斤逐渐加到60公斤,练背阔肌的拉力和后侧链协同发力;硬拉,每次3组,每组8次,从60公斤起步慢慢加到120公斤,强化腰方肌和竖脊肌的刚性支撑;仰卧对侧触够,左右交替各10次共完成3组,在动态中提高核心肌群的稳定控制。刚开始的两周,他感觉每次练完腰背都僵硬得像块铁板,一个月后效果开始显现——20海里长划,到了后半程,他的动作依然能保持不变形。“以前是胳膊先扛不住,现在腰背把力稳稳送出去,胳膊只管执行。”再进行训练时,张鑫越来越游刃有余。 长时间、高强度的划桨训练,手上起水泡成了常态。一级上士余志颖双手的茧,是他引以为傲的训练痕迹。不少学员初次参训时,划行几海里便手臂酸胀、腰背僵硬,掌心被桨柄磨出水泡。老一辈海军官兵划舢板执行任务时,连续数十小时挥桨,体力透支依旧坚守战位,如今的训练场景,正是当年实战任务的真实写照。 晕船,也是官兵进行舢板训练的劲敌。碰上洋流湍急、逆流强劲的航段,即便官兵全力挥桨,舢板有时也会因暗流裹挟而原地打转。发力受阻、体能透支,官兵承受着身心的双重压力。 这时,官兵必须时刻保持核心肌群紧绷,以对抗被冲得不断摇晃的船体。列兵马凯军一直向往大海,却严重晕船。第一次出海训练,刚出发他就吐了,脸色发白。队友劝他回去,他却摆手说:“我不能连这点风浪都扛不过去。”回到岸上后,他来到了浪桥边,在班长的指导下站在晃板上练平衡。从站不稳到能边晃边模拟划桨动作,他用了整整两周。又一次出海训练,海况三级,船头被涌浪拍得直打转,马凯军握着桨的手青筋暴起,嘴里跟着舵手的号子一声声喊出来。25海里的距离,他和战友们一起顺利完成。 舢板,是对力量和意志的考验,也是一场同舟共济、团结一心的拼搏。一个人再强也划不动一条船,但14个人一条心,桨频一致、入水角度一致、发力节点一致,那条3吨重的舢板就能贴着水面快速前行。张鑫说:“舢板教会我,把后背交给战友的同时,自己也要对得起他们的信任。”马凯军的收获更朴素——“以前觉得自己撑不住的,现在相信自己能咬牙顶过去。” 风浪骤起,汹涌澎湃。扁舟一叶,驭风逐浪。勇士们从不惧怕风浪,无论在多么艰苦的环境里,都能凭借勇气、力量和智慧,与风浪、险阻进行奋勇抗争…… 夕阳西下,一场长达4个小时的海上舢板训练结束了,马凯军和战友们一起扛着船桨,兴高采烈地返回营区。
