PLA Daily, Abyei, August 9 — Reported by Huang Hao and Wu Xinwei: In the early morning hours of the 9th, a civilian helicopter belonging to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) suffered a sudden mechanical failure and was unable to execute a scheduled cross-regional transport mission from Abyei to Juba on time, placing frontline peacekeeping personnel transfers at risk of delay. Upon receiving an urgent support request from UNISFA's aviation department, China's 6th Peacekeeping Helicopter Detachment to Abyei responded swiftly, stepping in to deploy and execute the mission.

With the mission on their shoulders, there was not a moment to lose. The detachment immediately activated its emergency contingency plan and dispatched two helicopters to fly to Juba. To meet the challenges posed by long-duration flight, the detachment assigned an additional aircraft commander and aerial mechanic to each aircraft, forming rotating aircrews to ensure uninterrupted aerial operation and equipment monitoring. Upon arriving in Juba, after a brief refueling stop, the crews immediately flew back in accordance with mission requirements.

On the return leg, the crews repeatedly encountered thunderstorm cells; dark clouds roiled outside the cabin windows, and strong air currents caused the aircraft to pitch and shake continuously.
