The Fields Medal is the highest honor in global mathematics, hailed as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics." Not long ago, Chinese scholars Wang Hong and Deng Yu claimed this prize, achieving a historic breakthrough for our country in this award. Behind the dazzling glory lies years of quiet perseverance and silent toil. The two young scholars immersed themselves in difficult mathematical problems, conducting painstaking research and repeated deduction on the academic frontier, exchanging long and solitary dedication for achievements that have drawn worldwide attention. This inspiring historic breakthrough vividly confirms a simple yet profound truth: basic research, as the wellspring of the entire scientific system, cannot achieve major original innovation overnight — it requires prolonged effort and the gradual release of deep accumulation. On the new journey, accelerating scientific and technological self-reliance and self-improvement, and giving full play to the strategic supporting role of science and technology in our military's development, requires us to cultivate the fertile ground of basic research, actively guide the broad ranks of scientific researchers to embrace solitude and devote themselves to scholarship, continuously improve institutional safeguards, foster a rich atmosphere of innovation, and together warm the "cold bench" (冷板凳) of basic research.

At present, a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating toward breakthroughs, global competition in science and technology is increasingly focused on basic frontier fields, and the importance of original and disruptive innovation is becoming ever more prominent. Looking across the history of human warfare, military scientific research is "an adventure of ideas" and "a contest on the silent battlefield," and breakthroughs in basic research are closely linked to the outcome of wars. Breakthroughs achieved in basic research often give rise to disruptive technologies, nurture new-quality combat capabilities (新质战斗力), and ultimately translate into decisive advantages on the battlefield. The period of the 15th Five-Year Plan is a critical period of concentrated effort in building a strong science and technology nation, and also a critical stage for high-quality advancement of national defense and military modernization. Chairman Xi has emphasized that we must seize opportunities and meet challenges, genuinely place basic research on an important agenda, sustain our efforts continuously, and keep producing new results. On the road ahead, we must squarely face the "coldness" of basic research, resolve the "difficulties" of basic research, and make determined efforts to warm the "cold bench" of basic research, so as to provide solid scientific and technological support for winning the initiative in future wars.

Warming the "cold bench" of basic research requires, above all, cultivating the scientific research resolve (科研定力) to focus single-mindedly on war-fighting and to sustain effort over the long term. Basic research is a solitary and arduous long-term endeavor that tests one's character to the utmost. Research and problem-solving cycles are lengthy and results accumulate slowly, placing exceptional demands on the perseverance and tenacity of scientific researchers; the path of innovative exploration is unknown and trial and error is a constant companion, making it all the more necessary for researchers to hold fast to their original aspirations and face setbacks without fear. Academician Ben De, 88 years old, is the founder of China's airborne pulse Doppler radar technology, a principal pioneer of phased-array radar technology, and a trailblazer in space-based surveillance radar technology. With wholehearted dedication to "choosing one thing and devoting one's entire life to it," he has safeguarded national development and security — a vivid embodiment of the deep commitment and steadfast conduct of scientific researchers. Confronting the "ten years to sharpen a sword" nature of basic research, the broad ranks of scientific researchers must both carry a sense of urgency that "there is no time to wait," a sense of mission that "one cannot sit still," and a sense of crisis that "one cannot afford to be slow" — keeping a close eye on the frontiers of military science and technology and closely attending to the real demands of preparing for and fighting wars, boldly venturing into the "no man's land" of basic research, and concentrating effort to achieve original breakthroughs "from 0 to 1" — and also cultivate the awareness to "be able to sit down," the quality to "sit steadily," and the rationality that "one cannot rush," firmly upholding the original aspiration and mission of serving the country through science and technology, not being trapped by worldly utilitarian judgments, not blindly following momentary industry trends, eliminating all distractions, concentrating all energy, and advancing day by day toward the frontier of the era and scaling the heights of science and technology.

Warming the "cold bench" of basic research also requires building an innovation ecosystem (创新生态) conducive to devoted scholarship and focused problem-solving. The perseverance of scientific researchers requires institutional nurturing; the deep cultivation of basic research requires an enabling environment. Competition in basic research is not only a contest of the abilities and qualities of talent itself, but even more a comprehensive contest of the soil in which talent grows and the institutional environment. Only by giving those who devote themselves to research a stage, prospects, and a future can we make them willing to sit, dare to sit, and sit steadily on the "cold bench" of basic research. On one hand, the reason basic research is "cold" is fundamentally rooted in its objective nature of exploring the unknown — a developmental bottleneck in the scientific research field that has long been urgently in need of resolution. This requires us to improve differentiated evaluation mechanisms, make great efforts to "break the four 'onlys'" (破四唯), establish a value orientation that emphasizes original work, long-term results, and real-world combat application, refrain from judging research value simply by short-term output, refrain from negating research value because results have not yet appeared, and reserve sufficient space for research that has long cycles, lacks consensus, and carries high risk; improve fault-tolerance and error-correction mechanisms, accommodate trial and error in scientific exploration, relieve scientific researchers of their ideological burdens, support them in freely exercising their innovative initiative, and enable them to charge continuously and without distraction at the most fundamental and most intractable problems; and scientifically optimize resource allocation, maintaining stable support for obscure disciplines and long-term research topics, and cultivating the soil of innovation through sustained investment. On the other hand, basic research is a long-distance relay race requiring successive generations of scientists to carry the effort forward. Young scientific and technological talent, as the group with the greatest innovative vitality, is the new force in basic research. We must give them responsibilities, build ladders for them, and provide them platforms, placing them at the front lines of scientific research to be tempered, supporting them to take on major responsibilities and play leading roles, continuously replenishing innovative vitality, and ensuring that the "cold bench" always has successors.

The historic breakthrough of the Fields Medal bears witness to the great strides made in China's basic research, and also allows us to see clearly the value of the era in deeply cultivating source innovation (源头创新). As long as we continuously cultivate the scientific research original aspiration of devoted scholarship, improve the institutional system that consolidates foundations and nurtures roots (固本培元), and enable more and more scientific researchers to be willing to take root in basic research, we will surely give rise to more original innovations and major breakthroughs, and genuinely lay a solid foundation for building a strong military through science and technology.

菲尔兹奖是全球数学领域的至高荣誉,被誉为“数学界的诺贝尔奖”。前不久,中国籍学者王虹、邓煜摘得这一桂冠,实现我国在该奖项上的历史性重大突破。耀眼荣耀的背后,是经年累月的沉潜坚守与默默耕耘。两位青年学者深耕数学难题,在学术荒原潜心钻研、反复推演,用漫长寂寞的坚守换来了举世瞩目的成就。这一振奋人心的历史性突破,生动印证了一个朴素而深刻的道理,基础研究作为整个科学体系的源头,其重大原始创新绝非一蹴而就之事,而是久久为功的厚积薄发。新征程上,加快科技自立自强,充分发挥科技对我军建设战略支撑作用,必须深耕基础研究这片沃土,积极引导广大科研工作者甘于寂寞、潜心治学,不断完善制度保障、浓厚创新氛围,共同把基础研究的“冷板凳”坐热。 当前,新一轮科技革命和产业变革加速突破,全球科技竞争更加聚焦基础前沿领域,原创性颠覆性创新的重要性日益凸显。纵观人类军事史,军事科研是“思想的探险”,是“寂静战场的博弈”,基础研究的创新与战争胜负关联紧密。在基础研究上取得的突破,往往能够催生出颠覆性技术,孕育出新质战斗力,最终转化为战场上的制胜优势。“十五五”时期是科技强国建设的关键攻坚期,也是高质量推进国防和军队现代化的关键阶段。习主席强调,我们要抓住机遇、应对挑战,切实把基础研究工作摆上重要日程,持续抓下去,不断抓出新成效。前进道路上,我们必须正视基础研究的“冷”,化解基础研究的“难”,下气力坐热基础研究的“冷板凳”,为赢得未来战争主动权提供坚实科技支撑。 坐热基础研究的“冷板凳”,关键在涵养潜心向战、久久为功的科研定力。基础研究是寂寞清苦的长线事业,最是磨砺心性。研究攻关周期漫长、成果积淀缓慢,格外考验科研工作者的恒心韧劲;创新探索前路未知、试错常态相伴,更需要科研工作者坚守初心、不惧挫折。88岁的贲德院士,是我国机载脉冲多普勒雷达技术的奠基者、相控阵雷达技术的主要开创者、天基监视雷达技术的先行者。他以“择一事、终一生”的倾心专注,守护国家发展和安全,正是科研工作者沉心笃行的鲜活写照。面对“十年磨一剑”的基础研究,广大科研工作者既要心怀“等不起”的紧迫感、“坐不住”的使命感、“慢不得”的危机感,紧盯军事科技前沿、紧扣备战打仗现实需求,勇闯基础研究“无人区”,聚力实现“从0到1”的原创性突破;也要涵养“坐得下”的觉悟、“坐得稳”的素质和“急不得”的理性,坚定科技报国初心使命,不困于世俗的功利评判,不盲从一时的行业热度,排除一切干扰,集中全部精力,在日积月累中进军时代前沿、攀上科技高峰。 坐热基础研究的“冷板凳”,还须营造潜心治学、安心攻坚的创新生态。科研工作者的坚守需要制度呵护,基础研究的深耕需要环境托举。基础研究的竞争,比拼的不只是人才本身的能力素质,更是人才土壤、制度环境的综合较量。只有让潜心研究者有舞台、有奔头、有未来,才能让他们愿意坐、敢于坐、坐得稳基础研究这张“冷板凳”。一方面,基础研究之所以“冷”,本质是源于其探索未知的客观属性,是长期以来科研领域亟待破解的发展堵点。这就要求我们必须完善分类评价机制,下大气力“破四唯”,立起重原创、重长远、重实战的价值导向,不简单用短期产出评判研究价值,不因一时没有成果否定研究价值,给长周期、非共识、高风险的研究预留足够空间;健全容错纠错机制,包容科研探索中的试错失误,卸下科研工作者的思想包袱,支持他们放开创新手脚,向最基础、最棘手的难题心无旁骛地持续冲锋;科学优化资源配置,对冷门学科、长线课题保持稳定扶持,以持续投入厚植创新土壤。另一方面,基础研究是一场长跑接力,需要一代代科技人接续奋斗。青年科技人才作为最具创新活力的群体,是基础研究的生力军。要给他们压担子、架梯子、搭台子,把他们放到科研一线磨砺,托举他们挑大梁、当主角,持续充盈创新活力,让“冷板凳”上始终后继有人。 菲尔兹奖的历史性突破,见证了中国基础研究的长足进步,也让我们看清了深耕源头创新的时代价值。只要我们持续涵养潜心治学的科研初心,完善固本培元的制度体系,让越来越多的科研工作者愿意扎根基础研究,必能催生更多原始创新、重大突破,切实为科技强军筑牢地基。 (作者单位:国防大学习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想研究中心)
