The Chinese Navy's Vessel-83 formation — built around the training ship Qi Jiguang and the amphibious transport dock Kunlunshan — departed Surabaya's Tanjung Perak Port on August 6 after a four-day goodwill visit to Indonesia, conducted under the far-seas comprehensive training and visit mission (远海综合实习访问任务) framework that combines naval cadet at-sea training with port diplomacy. The visit included a friendship sports meet and cultural salon with Indonesian Naval Academy cadets, ship open days for local civilians and overseas Chinese, and — notably — maritime joint training with the Indonesian Navy conducted immediately after departure. The joint-training element extends the visit beyond standard cadet-cruise diplomacy and documents an operational layer to the engagement, though the article provides no detail on exercise scope, participating Indonesian units, or training objectives.

Our Navy's Vessel-83 Formation Concludes Goodwill Visit to Indonesia

PLA Daily, Surabaya, Indonesia, August 6 — Reported by Zhang Wanying and correspondent Zhang Dan: On the morning of the 6th, the Chinese Navy's Vessel-83 formation departed Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, Indonesia, successfully concluding a four-day goodwill visit and continuing its far-seas comprehensive training and visit mission (远海综合实习访问任务).

Staff from the Chinese Consulate General in Surabaya, representatives of local overseas Chinese, Chinese-funded institutions, and international students, as well as representatives of Indonesian Navy officers and soldiers, came to the pier to see the formation off. The formation's trainee students lined up by section on deck to salute the crowd gathered to bid them farewell.

During the visit to Indonesia, the formation's commander called on Indonesian military and government leaders. Visiting trainees and officers and soldiers went to the Indonesian Naval Academy to participate in a friendship sports meet and jointly held a cultural salon with Indonesian naval cadets. The two sides also organized ship mutual visits, symposiums, and exchange activities. While the formation was berthed at Tanjung Perak Port, local residents, overseas Chinese, and Indonesian military representatives boarded the Qi Jiguang and Kunlunshan to tour the vessels and gain a close-up understanding of Chinese Navy ships and maritime culture. This series of exchange activities built a platform for mutual learning and mutual reference (互学互鉴), advancing the continued deepening and substantive development of China-Indonesia military-to-military relations and further consolidating the traditional friendship between the two countries.

At the invitation of the Indonesian Navy, after departing Tanjung Perak Port, the formation conducted maritime joint training with the Indonesian Navy.
