From the Clouds to the Ground: Pilots of an Air Force Brigade Temper Themselves at the Maintenance Front Line
On a summer day, a routine combat aircraft inspection and maintenance operation was underway on the flight line apron of an Air Force brigade. Reporters at the scene observed that those conducting the aircraft "physical examinations" were not maintenance personnel but pilots who had shed their flight gear. Holding professional equipment and under the guidance of maintenance personnel, they carried out inspection and maintenance work on the aircraft with meticulous care. This was one scene from the brigade's program organizing pilots to go deep into the maintenance front line for soldier-tempering exercises (当兵锻炼). The impetus for launching this program came from an experience of a mission not completed.
Not long ago, a young pilot who had just completed transition training on a new aircraft was executing a training mission when, due to unfamiliarity with the performance of the external pod on the aircraft, he mistakenly left the pod in an extreme position for an extended period. Although this operation caused no damage to the equipment, it resulted in the training mission for that sortie failing to be completed smoothly.
"This kind of situation is not an isolated case," the brigade leadership found during their investigation. Because the working environments of aircrew and ground crew are completely separate and their areas of specialized knowledge differ entirely, pilots' training focus is ordinarily concentrated on cockpit instruments, weapons systems, and tactics and methods of operation (战术战法), leaving them with insufficient understanding of the key points of aircraft inspection and maintenance support and the performance of external equipment.
To address this, the brigade decided to organize pilots to go deep into maintenance positions such as mechanical and ordnance sections for soldier-tempering exercises, following along to train and learn. They began with basic tasks such as lubricating and cleaning the aircraft, then gradually participated in component adjustment, testing, and troubleshooting, deepening their understanding of the aircraft at the maintenance front line.
"In the past, when conducting flight training, I mostly paid attention to engine thrust; now, directly participating in borescope inspection of engine blades has given me a firsthand, intuitive sense of the impact that sand, dust, and foreign objects have on aircraft performance," one pilot remarked. "When conducting low-altitude and ultra-low-altitude flight training, I will pay closer attention to subtle changes in flight state to ensure flight safety."
In the brigade's special equipment operations room, reporters observed several pilots gathered around densely packed circuit diagrams conducting a ground joint test of the flight control system. Under the guidance of maintenance personnel, after the pilots entered parameters, the operating status of the internal components of the actuators was immediately clear. "The action of pushing and pulling the control stick looks simple, but behind it many components are operating efficiently in support. Any loose solder joint or poor connector contact on any one component could potentially trigger a safety incident," said one pilot, adding that this soldier-tempering exercise gave him a far deeper understanding of the maintenance personnel's ethos of taking extreme responsibility (极端负责) and carrying out meticulous repairs.
During the soldier-tempering exercise period, in addition to participating in routine support operations, the pilots also joined maintenance personnel in convening "Zhuge Liang meetings" (诸葛亮会) to analyze in detail the causes of occasional equipment malfunctions that arose during training and to jointly study improvement plans.
At one such "Zhuge Liang meeting," the flight squadron commander raised from a tactical employment perspective the problem of a certain type of radar easily losing targets in complex electromagnetic environments, and opened a discussion with maintenance personnel. An electronics technician from the maintenance squadron analyzed the issue in conjunction with the radar's operating principles, not only helping the pilots identify the root cause of the problem but also compiling a set of mnemonics to make it easier for pilots to operate the equipment, effectively improving the quality and efficiency of flight training.
"Pilots, as the direct operators of the aircraft, have the most immediate and profound experience with the equipment, and their feedback and suggestions can also help ground support work focus more sharply on the battlefield," said the maintenance squadron commander, adding that they would compile and organize the issues raised by pilots into a key-points reference handbook, striving to make it something pilots can understand at a glance and master after one study.
"Flight is the endeavor of the brave. Lifting the war eagle to fly high and far cannot be achieved without the joint efforts of pilots and maintenance personnel." The brigade leadership told reporters that pilots have broadly reflected that since going deep into the maintenance front line for soldier-tempering exercises, they have studied and grasped the operating principles of the equipment, come to understand the aircraft's "temperament and characteristics" (脾气秉性), and feel more confident when handling in-flight emergencies (空中特情). Moreover, maintenance personnel, through their exchanges with pilots, have also come to understand pilots' combat intentions and operating habits, promoting an improvement in maintenance support capabilities.
