The PLA General Hospital and the Military-Wide Expert Group on Heat Stroke Prevention and Treatment, under CMC Logistic Support Department Health Bureau guidance, have begun distributing a six-volume textbook series on heat stroke prevention and treatment to grassroots units across the entire military, with full coverage of all units and hospitals planned by 2026. The series documents a formal institutional effort to standardize heat-casualty management along a full chain from prevention through rehabilitation, framed explicitly around reducing non-combat attrition (非战斗减员) during high-temperature, high-humidity training and operations. The framing points to persistent heat-casualty losses as a recognized readiness problem — the textbooks provide a baseline for how the PLA is now codifying doctrine on this issue at the grassroots medical level.

Military-Wide First Series of Textbooks on Heat Stroke Prevention and Treatment Distributed to Troops

■ Zhang Yuxiang, PLA Daily Reporter Li Weixin

Recently, a series of textbooks on heat stroke prevention and treatment, compiled under the lead of the PLA General Hospital and the Military-Wide Expert Group on Heat Stroke Prevention and Treatment, was formally distributed to grassroots units throughout the entire military. This is our military's first professional textbook series on heat stroke prevention and treatment, marking an important step toward standardization (标准化), normalization (规范化), and combat-realistic application (实战化) in the field of high-temperature medical protection.

The textbooks were compiled jointly by military-wide experts in the field of heat stroke under the guidance of the Health Bureau of the Central Military Commission Logistic Support Department. The series comprises six volumes: Guide to Heat Stroke Prevention in Military Units, Guide to Heat Acclimatization Training in Military Units, Training Textbook on Heat Stroke Prevention and Treatment for Military Units, Guide to On-Site Emergency Response for Heat Stroke in Military Units, Specialist Guide to Heat Stroke Treatment in Military Units, and Compendium of Typical Cases in Military Heat Stroke Treatment.

The textbooks are structured around the full-chain management concept (全链条管理理念) of "prevention—early warning—emergency response—critical care management—rehabilitation and return to duty," and collectively showcase the new technologies, new standards, and new experience currently achieved by our military in the field of heat stroke prevention and treatment. The content of the textbooks emphasizes both combat-realistic requirements and grassroots realities, providing robust medical support (卫勤支撑) for troops conducting combat-realistic training and carrying out various missions in high-temperature, high-humidity environments.

It is reported that distribution of the textbooks has already commenced, with plans to cover all grassroots units and hospitals at all levels throughout the entire military by 2026. The promotion and use of these textbooks will provide grassroots medical personnel (基层卫生骨干) with an authoritative and practical reference on heat stroke prevention and treatment, effectively enhancing officers' and soldiers' capacity for self-rescue and mutual rescue and raising the level of grassroots medical support (基层卫勤保障), thereby minimizing non-combat attrition (非战斗减员) in high-temperature environments to the greatest extent possible.
