A PLA commentary in the Strong Military Forum uses an unnamed unit's exercise failure — caused by acting on unverified intelligence shared by a neighboring unit — to argue against what it calls 坐享其成 (reaping without sowing), the habit of treating shared platform data, higher-echelon feeds, and adjacent-unit intelligence as ready-to-use decision inputs. During a military exercise, a certain unit saw "enemy situation" information posted on a network platform by a neighboring unit and, without a second thought, applied it directly to operational decision-making — only to lose the exercise because the information was wrong. The unit's commander came away with a deep impression: information sharing is an irreversible trend, but when faced with shared information, one must never simply reap without sowing (坐享其成).

Someone once vividly remarked that modern warfare is fought on "information" and "data." In the information age, facing a battlefield saturated with complex information, whether one possesses the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood (去伪存真) in information recognition, and whether one can quickly and accurately discern the adversary's true capabilities, often influences the course of battle and determines victory or defeat. The integrated joint operations (一体化联合作战) character of modern warfare determines the necessity and universality of information sharing. Compared with traditional models, modern warfare involves deep integration of elements such as reconnaissance and early warning, command and control, fire strikes, and logistical support. A single piece of intelligence data can be simultaneously pushed to command organs, forward elements, supporting forces, and other operational entities, becoming a common basis for decision-making and action by all parties. It can be said that the collaborative advantage, speed advantage, and precision advantage of informatized and intelligentized warfare (信息化智能化战争) all depend on the advantages brought by information sharing. An information model featuring full-personnel access (全员通览), all-domain applicability (全域通用), and real-time sharing has already become the basic norm of modern operations.

But behind this advantage lurks a fatal hidden danger. Because in essence, no single piece of intelligence on the battlefield can guarantee absolute objectivity, absolute authenticity, or absolute completeness. In modern warfare especially, battlefield conditions are intricate and complex, the confrontation situation changes in an instant, and due to the constraints of multiple factors — reconnaissance range, equipment performance, battlefield camouflage, electromagnetic interference — any information obtained through any reconnaissance means or intelligence channel is only a partial fragment of the battlefield. Certain battlefield intelligence that appears complete often conceals undetected enemy activity, changes not yet updated, and risks not yet anticipated. This inherent information limitation is an objective shortcoming that cannot be entirely eliminated.

At present, some commanders easily fall into the thinking trap of "take it and use it, reap without sowing (拿来即用、坐享其成)," taking it for granted that intelligence pushed by shared platforms, information passed down by higher echelons, and data provided by neighboring units can be used directly as the basis for decisions and actions. This excessive dependence on shared information weakens the operational principles of independent analysis and cross-verification, allowing the harm of information deficiencies to evolve from "individual error" into "systemic disaster." We must be on guard against such risks at all times.

Many classic historical battles have profoundly confirmed the fatal consequences of simply reaping from information sharing without independent verification. During the Battle of Midway, the Japanese military had constructed an intelligence-sharing system, but its intelligence personnel, relying solely on fragmentary information, subjectively concluded that the main U.S. carrier force was not in the operational sea area, and allowed this erroneous intelligence to be rapidly shared across all participating formations. Commanders of the Japanese fleet habitually reaped the analytical results of the intelligence department; no one conducted independent reconnaissance verification, and tactics were formulated and offensive formations arranged on the basis of the same distorted information. As a result, U.S. forces struck with precision, all four of Japan's main fleet carriers were sunk, the entire naval battle was lost outright, and strategic dominance over the Pacific theater was forfeited entirely.

The future battlefield will be complex and ever-changing, with all manner of information mixed together indiscriminately. Commanders at all levels should view information sharing dialectically, upholding the fundamental principle of treating shared information as reference and independent analysis as the foundation — neither credulous, nor blindly compliant, nor mechanically copying. They must be adept at separating the refined from the crude and the true from the false (去粗取精、去伪存真). Multi-layered intelligence verification mechanisms must be established, relying on multi-channel information comparison and multi-dimensional comprehensive analysis to eliminate subjective bias, filter false information, and fill reconnaissance blind spots. Analytical responsibilities at all levels must be firmly enforced; the passive tendencies of waiting for information, relying on sharing, and failing to verify must be resolutely discarded. Every operational unit must strive to develop the capability for independent reconnaissance, autonomous screening, and scientific analysis, so as to effectively prevent localized information distortions from evolving into systemic operational risks.

一场军事演习中,某部看到友邻单位在网络平台发布的“敌情”信息,不假思索便直接运用于作战决策,没想到却因信息有误导致演习败北。该部指挥员深有感触:信息互通是大势所趋,但面对共享信息,切不可坐享其成。 有人曾形象地说,现代战争打的是“信息”、是“数据”。在信息时代,直面信息庞杂的战场,有没有去伪存真的信息识别力、能不能快速准确地辨清对手的真实底数,往往影响战斗的进程,决定战争的胜败。现代战争一体化联合作战特征,决定了信息共享的必要性、普遍性。与传统模式相比,现代战争侦察预警、指挥控制、火力打击、后勤保障等要素深度融合,一条情报数据可同步推送至指挥机关、前沿分队、支援力量等作战主体,成为各方决策行动的共同依据。可以说,信息化智能化战争的协同优势、速度优势、精确优势,都离不开信息共享带来的优势,全员通览、全域通用、实时共享的信息模式,已经成为现代作战的基本常态。 但这种优势背后也暗藏着致命的隐忧。因为就实质而言,战场上没有任何一条情报信息能够保证绝对客观、绝对真实、绝对完整。尤其是现代战争,战场情况错综复杂、对抗态势瞬息万变,受侦察距离、设备性能、战场伪装、电磁干扰等多重因素限制,任何侦察手段、情报渠道获取的信息,都只是战场的局部片段。某些看似完整的战场情报,往往隐藏着未被发觉的敌情、尚未更新的变化、未能预判的风险。这种天然的信息局限,是无法彻底消除的客观短板。 当前,部分指挥员容易陷入“拿来即用、坐享其成”的思维误区,想当然认为共享平台推送的情报、上级流转的信息、友邻提供的数据可以直接当作决策与行动的依据。这种对共享信息的过度依赖,弱化了独立研判、交叉验证的作战原则,让信息缺陷的危害从“个体失误”演变为“体系灾难”。对于此类风险,我们必须时时提防。 历史上许多经典战例,深刻印证了面对信息共享、一味坐享带来的致命后果。中途岛海战中,日军构建了一套情报共享体系,其情报人员仅凭碎片化信息,主观判断美军航母主力不在作战海域,并任由这份错误情报迅速共享至全部参战编队。日军各舰队指挥员习惯性坐享情报部门的研判成果,没有人开展独立侦察核验,基于同一套失真信息制定战术、排布进攻阵型。结果,美军精准突袭,日军4艘主力航母悉数被击沉,直接输掉整场海战,彻底丧失太平洋战场战略主导权。 未来战场复杂多变,各类信息鱼龙混杂,各级指挥员应辩证看待信息共享,秉持以共享为参考、以研判为根本原则,不轻信、不盲从、不照搬,善于去粗取精、去伪存真。要建立多层次情报核验机制,依托多渠道信息对比、多维度综合研判,剔除主观偏差、过滤虚假信息、补齐侦察盲区。压实各级研判责任,坚决摒弃等信息、靠共享、不求证等消极倾向,努力让每个作战单元都具备独立侦察、自主甄别、科学研判的能力,有效防范局部信息偏差演变为体系作战风险。
