The Acceleration "Run" from a Wheelchair — A Profile of Wang Ji, Researcher at the National University of Defense Technology's College of Computer Science

Wang Ji, a professor at NUDT's College of Computer Science and a bilateral above-the-knee amputee undergoing three dialysis sessions per week, has spent over three decades leading research in high-assurance software (高可信软件) — formal-methods-based verification of critical defense software — with applications across aerospace, long-range missiles, supercomputers, and joint-operations systems; his team's national defense 973 Program project passed acceptance in 2021 and earned a First-Class Military Science and Technology Progress Award in January 2025. On the banks of the Xiang River, at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT). A morning breeze stirs, and the campus awakens from the dawn as flecks of light and shadow fall through the branches of the parasol trees. Wang Ji rapidly propels his wheelchair, navigating the campus with agility, and enters the "Tianhe" building where he works……

For decades, he has cultivated deep expertise in the field of high-assurance software (高可信软件), yielding abundant results — appointed professor at 33, awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars at 38, and honored with a First-Class Military Science and Technology Progress Award, a Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award, and numerous provincial and ministerial-level prizes……

Today, having undergone high-level bilateral amputation more than ten years ago and endured over 700 dialysis sessions, Wang Ji continues to "charge forward" on the new journey of building a strong nation and a strong military——

Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Strengthening the Military, Wang Ji takes his wheelchair as his battle position and, with a sense of urgency that brooks no delay, remains ever at the cutting edge of rapidly evolving national defense scientific research. Wang Ji's life — from "fast-forward" to "pause," from "restart" to "acceleration" — has, through the will to scale new heights and the conviction never to concede defeat, "run out" from a wheelchair the acceleration that belongs to this era.

**Original Aspiration**

Meeting Wang Ji for the first time, his clear gaze and brilliant smile are as warm as spring water. Because the amputation sites are so high, his legs have been entirely replaced by trouser legs folded neatly on the wheelchair.

Fate may have taken his health, but it has never changed his original aspiration.

"To take up arms and defend the state (执干戈以卫社稷)" — this is the meaning his parents embedded in his name. Wang Ji was born in Shanghai in November 1969 and the following year moved with his parents to Changde, Hunan, to support the Third Front Construction (三线建设). "Diligent young scholar" was the first impression people had of him — from elementary school onward, Wang Ji's outstanding mathematical talent allowed him to skip grades repeatedly. In 1983, not yet 14 years old, Wang Ji was admitted to NUDT's Department of Computer Science with outstanding results.

That same December, China's first hundred-million-operations-per-second supercomputer, "Galaxy-I" (银河-Ⅰ), was successfully developed at NUDT, making China the third country in the world capable of independently designing and manufacturing supercomputers.

At the time, the whole nation was jubilant, and "Galaxy-I" came to be called the "machine that proved our worth" (争气机).

The young Wang Ji witnessed the first clarion call for self-reliance and self-strengthening in China's computing enterprise, and his connection with "Galaxy" began there — later, his master's and doctoral supervisor would be Academician Chen Huowang, the chief software systems director of "Galaxy-I."

At a standing-room-only academic lecture, Chen Huowang passionately articulated the nation's urgent need for information technology and encouraged young people to dare to gnaw on the "hard bones" (硬骨头) and press boldly into high technology.

In the audience, Wang Ji's heart surged.

A young boy's vague wish "to study computers" gradually elevated into a firm conviction about the words "national defense": "Use computers to support national defense."

During the interview, we asked him: "Of everything you learned following Academician Chen, what influenced your life the most?"

"Confidence!" Wang Ji answered without hesitation: "'Galaxy-I's' system software was one of our country's earliest large-scale software engineering projects. In terms of software autonomy and controllability (软件自主可控), we have confidence in our ability to make our own contribution."

From the elder generation of "Galaxy people" such as Ci Yungui and Chen Huowang, he decoded the "cipher" of Chinese scientists' confidence, self-reliance, and self-strengthening: the fighting spirit of "giving everything, even one's life, to get it done" in the face of national and military needs.

After completing his doctorate and remaining at the university, Wang Ji resolved to forge a new path in software autonomy and controllability.

He firmly believed: what foreigners can do, Chinese people can do too.

In his application to join the Party, Wang Ji wrote: "I am willing to devote all my energy to the Party's cause and to struggle for it my entire life."

This road of independent innovation, bearing the weight of technological self-strengthening, he has walked for more than 30 years.

**Pioneering**

In China's computer software field, there are few who do not know Wang Ji.

Wang Huaimin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at NUDT, has assessed him this way: "Wang Ji is the principal pioneer of China's high-assurance software field."

From chasing the dream of spaceflight to advancing into the deep blue, from fighter aircraft soaring through the sky to long-range missiles standing ready, from supercomputers topping the rankings to the digital sinews of the battlefield — across more than 30 years of research related to high-assurance software technology, behind countless moments that have left a vivid impression on the Chinese people, the figures of Wang Ji and his team are present.

Yet more than 30 years ago, this field was virtually a "no-man's land" (无人区) in China.

Toward the end of the last century, as the People's Liberation Army (PLA) transitioned from mechanization to informatization, Wang Ji acutely recognized that software security directly bears on military and even national defense security.

At the same time, an overseas incident caught Wang Ji's attention: a certain launch vehicle exploded in a fireball dozens of seconds after liftoff.

The root cause was an error in a single line of code.

Wang Ji, wearing the uniform, realized that "software reliability" (软件可靠性) was bound to become the vital pressure point of national defense security. He pressed himself repeatedly: when software becomes the "brain" of a great nation's most powerful instruments, how can one ensure it will absolutely never fail at the most critical moment?

The young Wang Ji, thinking ahead about national strategic needs, conceived an entirely new research direction — high-assurance software technology: using mathematical methods to verify the correctness of code from the ground up in logic.

"High-assurance software is the 'doctor of software,'" explained Dong Wei, a professor at NUDT and member of Wang Ji's team. By performing a "full-body CT scan" of the software systems of a great nation's most powerful instruments and making precise diagnoses, one can identify deep-seated hidden vulnerabilities and hazards.

In 1999, the then-fledgling Wang Ji was invited to participate in a reliability assessment task for aerospace-related software. He and his team members ran repeated deductions and multi-dimensional tests, narrowing dozens of models down to five or six, then adjusted parameters one by one and iterated toward optimization…… After countless rounds of trial and error, the "best-fit" model was successfully identified.

In 2003, Wang Ji co-authored the paper "High-Assurance Software Engineering Technology" (《高可信软件工程技术》) with his supervisor Academician Chen Huowang and others. This was China's earliest systematic paper in the field and continues to be cited at high frequency by the academic community to this day.

"Only by doing frontier research is it easier to discover the frontier." Wang Ji often used this saying to encourage himself, and to inspire his colleagues and students.

He astutely predicted that as the times developed, the demands of national security and military informatization construction for high-assurance software would grow day by day, making it urgent to cultivate and build a first-rate team.

Accordingly, Wang Ji opened China's first graduate-level course in "high-assurance software technology," training professional talent for the nation in this field.

High-assurance software is foundational and critical research — the threshold is high, the difficulty great, and the cycle long. Many people dropped out midway, and Wang Ji was repeatedly urged to give up.

Wang Ji's answer was simple: "Someone has to sit on this 'cold bench' (冷板凳)."

Over the decades, Wang Ji and his team have been remarkably stable on this "cold bench" — core members such as Mao Xiaoguang and Chen Liqian: which of them is not a name that resonates throughout the field? What force has kept them so united in sitting on this "cold bench" alongside Wang Ji?

The answer is simple. As Wang Ji himself has said: "High-assurance software technology targets the critical technological foundation of national defense equipment. Results may be hard to come by quickly in the short term, but basic research aims at the future." Under his leadership, shared faith and mission have forged this team into a burning "torch" — keeping their eyes on the needs of the nation and the military, gnawing on the hardest "bones," with the sole aim of making high-assurance software ever more reliable.

In 2012, Wang Ji's team received an urgent request from the aerospace industry sector regarding trusted software, the main problem being defects such as intermittent system interruptions. After investigation and research, the software tools already available domestically at the time were found incapable of detecting and identifying the problem.

Do it, or not? "Scientific research is like climbing a mountain — keep going and a way will always be found." Wang Ji led the team to start from scratch and successfully solved the problem. The tool they developed later played an outstanding role in ensuring aerospace software quality.

Over the years, Wang Ji has led and participated in more than 30 important research projects, with some project results at the international forefront. He has led his team, always driven by major national equipment construction projects, and made important contributions to the reliability and security of critical software in major national and military weapons programs.

Time and again, when people's eyes are fixed on the "great national instruments" (国之重器) making their stunning appearances, Wang Ji and his team have long since melted back into the vast crowd, quietly forging the "high-assurance shield" (高可信之盾) of software for national security and the high-quality development of the military.

**"Restart"**

In a photograph, a young Wang Ji, physically whole, stands beside his daughter who is not yet two years old, his smile as radiant as the flowers in the flower field behind him.

This was a rare moment of warmth between Wang Ji — who spent long years busy at the scientific research front line — and his daughter. And such scenes were frozen forever in the spring of 2012.

A few months later, the unexpected struck.

In the early hours of January 23, 2013, Wang Ji suffered a sudden aortic dissection. This is an extremely dangerous cardiovascular emergency, with a mortality rate as high as 20%……

How dangerous? To save his life, Wang Ji underwent emergency "ascending aorta replacement + aortic arch replacement + stent elephant trunk implantation," a surgery lasting 13 hours; then, due to lower-limb arterial embolism causing muscle necrosis, he was compelled to undergo "high bilateral lower-limb amputation."

Wang Ji's condition gripped everyone's heart, and wave after wave of people rushed to the hospital to visit. The university's senior leadership went to the hospital in person to coordinate without pause: "He is a treasure of our university and the military. Please spare no cost to rescue him and preserve his life……"

Medical records at Xiangya Hospital show that from January 23, 2013 to July 1, 2013, Wang Ji underwent more than ten surgeries in total, including seven deep debridement surgeries alone, and spent a total of 147 days in the intensive care unit.

Semi-conscious after surgery, Wang Ji lay flat, unable to see how much of his legs remained. His wife, Huang Chun, suppressing her grief, gestured with her two palms held almost together: "This much is left."

Upon learning this, Wang Ji let out a long, heavy sigh.

Everyone assumed that Wang Ji, gravely ill, would perhaps press the "pause button."

"Wang Ji, when will you recover? We're all waiting for you to come back and keep working!" Leaders and colleagues encouraged him one after another.

But no one could have imagined that Wang Ji, still in the intensive care unit, had already begun a new "starting run"——

With both legs amputated from the hip, he could not adapt for a time; both hands were also frequently numb from prolonged nerve compression. Again and again, with great difficulty, he managed to sit up, only to collapse again in an instant……

Even though each attempt left him drenched in sweat from the pain, he still endured the agony and struggled to get up, poring over materials, typing on a keyboard, working on research projects……

The medical staff at Xiangya Hospital had seen many patients, but a patient who persisted in studying and working in the intensive care unit — that was a first.

Even at the darkest nadir of his life, what was never extinguished was the ember of faith deep in Wang Ji's heart.

On November 5, 2013, President Xi Jinping inspected NUDT. During the inspection, President Xi emphasized the need to work hard to build NUDT into a high ground for cultivating high-quality new-type military personnel and a high ground for autonomous innovation in national defense science and technology, providing strong talent and scientific and technological support for realizing the Chinese Dream and the Dream of a Strong Military.

Wang Ji read the news repeatedly on his hospital bed — the Commander-in-Chief's earnest instructions, the era's call of the Chinese Dream and the Dream of a Strong Military, the weighty mission of autonomous innovation in national defense science and technology…… In his heart, these converged into a single thought: "restart" himself.

"I am very fortunate — my brain and my hands are intact, and the basic conditions for work have not been lost. I think everything can be managed." Wang Ji used the language of computers to make light of himself: my body has experienced a "crash," but as long as I "restart," everything proceeds as normal.

On the journey of building a strong nation and a strong military in the new era, Wang Ji began the second charge of his life!

**Charging Forward**

After more than a year of rehabilitation training, one day after the Spring Festival of 2015, colleagues at NUDT were delighted to discover: Wang Ji — always wearing a smile — had returned, propelling his wheelchair!

During Wang Ji's rehabilitation, the university renovated barrier-free passageways and restrooms for him and made barrier-free modifications to every place he needed to pass through in his daily work.

Everyone said he was "the return of the king (王者归来)" — the bugle call of military strengthening in the new era had already sounded, and much work was waiting for him to take the lead……

In 2015, Wang Ji resolutely took the lead in applying for a national defense 973 Program project and served as its chief technical expert. This was the only purely software project that year targeting urgent national and military needs.

During the days of applying for project approval, Wang Ji tossed and turned for several nights in a row, unable to sleep.

A scene kept surfacing in his mind: at an academic conference, foreign researchers who had been volubly introducing their product technology, upon hearing that the Chinese visitors were from NUDT, began to deflect and then simply fell silent.

Behind the silence was a wordless contest.

Wang Ji knew that in the traditional sense of warfare, it would be very difficult for him to participate any longer. But on the battlefield of scientific and technological self-reliance and self-strengthening, he remained the iron soldier who forges shields with code and charges without cease.

On July 19, 2017, another unforgettable day. In step with the era's pulse of reform and military strengthening, President Xi Jinping presented the military flag and delivered instructions to the newly reorganized and established NUDT, marking a new historical position for this military academy that had traversed arduous years — NUDT is a high ground for cultivating high-quality new-type military personnel and for autonomous innovation in national defense science and technology.

"High ground" — the Commander-in-Chief's earnest expectation of NUDT.

"Since it is a high ground, on the journey of strengthening the military through science and technology and through talent, we should rightly be at the very forefront." Mission and martial spirit surged in his heart, converging into all the strength driving Wang Ji's "restart" on this "high ground."

Only, this "restart" had no shortcut key——

To condition his body to the intensity of work, Wang Ji "sweated profusely" in rehabilitation training; to improve mobility efficiency, he abandoned prosthetics that proved ineffective and chose to spend his life with a wheelchair; to maintain his physical condition, he persisted in using a manual wheelchair as his "fitness equipment"……

As chief technical expert, the project's advancement required countless planning reviews, milestone checks, and acceptance evaluations that demanded he travel to other locations. University and college leadership expressed concern, but out of a strong sense of responsibility, Wang Ji always handled these personally.

Over time, Wang Ji also worked out a set of his own "secret travel methods."

— Traveling alone, he invented his own "pommel horse vault" (鞍马跳) for getting in and out of vehicles: when getting in, he uses the strength of his arms and core to hoist his entire body and land steadily in the front passenger seat; getting out is the reverse — the whole sequence fast and precise;

— For trips that can be completed in a single day, he never stays overnight. He frequently catches the earliest flight, finishes his business, and then catches the last flight back to Changsha that same day, ensuring he appears in the office as normal the next day;

— His luggage is also simple: a backpack worn on his chest, containing materials, a laptop, and a change of clothes……

On one occasion, prolonged sitting during a business trip meeting caused the skin flap on Wang Ji's right amputation site to break down and ulcerate. He smiled and agreed to the doctor's instructions.

Before long, however, he was traveling again……

So as not to delay progress, during the years the national defense 973 project was advancing, Wang Ji made more than 70 business trips in total — even the staff at Changsha Huanghua Airport came to know this "wheelchair professor."

After six years of exhausting effort, Wang Ji and his team developed a "toolbox" targeting software reliability problems across different domains and different types. In 2021, the project successfully passed acceptance review, and the comprehensive evaluation report stated: "The overall technical level is at the international forefront and domestic leading position, with some comparable indicators at the international leading level." In January 2025, based on results incubated from the project, Wang Ji was awarded a First-Class Military Science and Technology Progress Award, and the relevant technologies were successfully applied to multiple critical national defense equipment programs.

At the same time, under the pressure of the project, Wang Ji also pushed for the establishment of the China Computer Federation's Formal Methods Technical Committee (中国计算机学会形式化方法专委会).

As the "mathematical foundation" of high-assurance software technology, research in formal methods (形式化方法) is critically important. "Establishing the technical committee was precisely to rally the small but extremely precious scientific research forces across the country," Wang Ji said.

Today, this precious scientific research force has grown from the initial few dozen people in 2015 to more than a thousand.

"The pathfinder in the deep mountains and old forests is always the first to see the sunrise." Some have used these words to describe Wang Ji.

In Wang Ji, technological self-reliance and self-strengthening has never been a slogan — it is a charge with every ounce of strength.

**Acceleration**

Keeping pace with the new era's drive to strengthen the military through science and technology, Wang Ji's battle position has undergone a profound "displacement" — the orbital paths of the BeiDou constellation, the "footprints" on the lunar surface, the wakes of vessels heading into the deep blue, and the electromagnetic waves cutting through the air in joint operations all invisibly pull at the direction of Wang Ji's and his team's charge.

Wang Ji has "sensed" the urgency of the era bearing down: "People in software all say 'software defines warfare' (软件定义战争). Intelligentized warfare (智能化作战) is a competition over whose software is faster and better."

Yet fate was also competing for his time.

In 2021, Wang Ji collapsed on the lecture platform and was diagnosed with renal failure, with no conditions suitable for a kidney transplant. As his condition progressed, he required three dialysis sessions per week to maintain his physical state.

Those who have faced death understand the weight of time more deeply.

Time waits for no one——

To save time, he has long lived in the hospital ward, moving between "ward and office" on a two-point line;

To save the time of going back and forth to the cafeteria, he often eats in the office, occasionally using the noon hour to go home and see his family;

Even while undergoing dialysis in the hospital bed, he uses his phone to review frontier materials in relevant domestic and international fields;

On business trips, when the armrest of his wheelchair broke, he had no time to repair it — he wrapped it with tape and kept going……

Time waits for no one——

"Scientific research addresses the work of today; teaching and education cultivates the people of the future — neither can be set aside." Wang Ji said.

Education is a fundamental undertaking of the nation and the Party. For this fundamental undertaking, Wang Ji regards his students' growth as his greatest success, not only imparting knowledge of high-assurance software but also planting the seeds of a high-assurance life.

He has a habit when guiding students — he rarely uses PowerPoint, instead having students work through derivations on a whiteboard with markers; the moment he detects a logical gap, he calls an immediate halt.

Student Du Yi recalls that while covering a chapter on formal methods, he got stuck halfway through writing on the whiteboard. Wang Ji took the marker and began deriving from foundational theorems — row after row of neat formulas and clear logical chains appeared on the whiteboard.

"Those ten-odd minutes of being stuck were the most solidly I learned anything that semester," Du Yi said.

This "whiteboard teaching method" (白板教学法) is something Wang Ji inherited from his supervisor Academician Chen Huowang. The method has also been inherited by Wang Ji's colleagues and students. Batch after batch of people who were forged in front of the whiteboard have now become the backbone of their respective fields.

Time waits for no one——

Students all say that Teacher Wang Ji's time is a variable — he economizes it to the extreme for himself, yet is boundlessly generous with it for his students.

Student Liu Wanwei encountered setbacks while improving a classical algorithm and was on the verge of giving up. Wang Ji told him: "This is a root technology (根技术) in the nation's software field — no amount of time spent on it is too much." Teacher and student devoted themselves to it for four years, and ultimately, through tight analysis, reduced the upper bound of the algorithm's complexity by an exponential factor. Liu Wanwei later said, "Without that word from Teacher Wang, I definitely could not have persisted."

Wang Ji always smiles and says he is a "worn-out vehicle that must go slowly." But once he gets to work, the speed at which he propels his wheelchair requires an ordinary person to jog to keep up.

"Urgency" and "no urgency" both stem from Wang Ji's understanding of mission — "President Xi requires scientific and technological workers to write their papers on the land of the motherland. As a military research worker, that means writing papers in the practice of building a strong nation and a strong military."

For the sake of a strong military, he can race against time, rushing about with a sense that time will not wait; for the sake of a strong military, he can spend decades researching high-assurance software technology; for the sake of a strong military, he can spend four years guiding a student to improve an algorithm…… He says: "Doing scientific research requires both reaching for the sky and standing on the ground (顶天立地). Reaching for the sky means focusing on the major strategic needs of the nation and the military; standing on the ground means serving new-quality productive forces (新质生产力) and new-quality combat capabilities (新质战斗力) in every respect."

**Glory**

Inside a venue at NUDT's College of Computer Science, before a painting titled "Little Tail" (小尾巴), Wang Ji in his wheelchair laughs heartily. In the painting, his wife Huang Chun is absorbed in her work, while their daughter, her hair in a ponytail, lies on the floor of a computer room helping the aunties and uncles record data and affix labels……

Behind this painting is a story that commands both admiration and tears——

In the first half of 2021, Wang Ji needed to travel elsewhere for treatment due to renal failure. At the same time, Wang Ji's wife, Huang Chun — chief designer of the "Tianhe" supercomputer compiler team — was also at a critical stage of a key project push, requiring concentrated work in Tianjin.

Wang Ji got in first and said to Huang Chun: "Go without worry — I'll be fine."

Only then did Huang Chun make up her mind, taking their young daughter and heading to Tianjin. After two months of intensive effort, the "Tianhe" E-class computer verification system that Huang Chun's team participated in developing claimed two world firsts.

"For scientific researchers, mutual fulfillment in one's career is the best form of companionship." Wang Ji said.

There is a kind of "lightness and ease" that conceals the deepest affection. Wang Ji and Huang Chun, through their loyalty to mission and their pursuit of the national defense science and technology enterprise, entrust to each other their trust and encouragement.

The year Wang Ji fell ill, his daughter was just over two years old. When she was in elementary school, she once drew a "planning diagram" for her father titled "Steps" (台阶): steps extending upward one by one…… In the lower right corner of the drawing, his daughter wrote: "The steps symbolize Father's self-respect and ideals."

A person stands upright not only on two legs, but also on spirit; a soldier stands upright not only in an erect posture, but in an ever-upward charge — the "Galaxy spirit" (银河精神) of "cherishing the motherland, uniting in cooperation, aspiring to the summit, and striving with courage" (胸怀祖国、团结协作、志在高峰、奋勇拼搏) was forged by Academician Chen Huowang and the elder generation of "Galaxy people" in the crucible of arduous breakthroughs.

"Galaxy connects to Zhongnanhai (银河连着中南海)" — these seven characters are engraved on a bronze plaque inside the "Tianhe" building. These seven characters, each carrying the weight of a thousand jun, silently bear witness to the fact that all faculty and students of NUDT have always resonated in the same frequency with the destiny of the Party, the nation, and the military.

What Wang Ji received from his predecessors was not only a body of knowledge, but a mission. He often tells his students: NUDT students must be the vanguard who break through "chokepoint" technologies (卡脖子技术), not profit-seekers chasing hot topics.

New journey, new mission. 湘江之畔,国防科技大学。 晨风拂过,校园从黎明中苏醒,点点光影从梧桐树的枝叶间落下。 王戟快速摇动轮椅,灵活地在校园穿行,进入他工作的“天河”楼…… 数十年来,他深耕高可信软件领域,硕果累累—— 33岁被评定为教授,38岁获国家杰出青年科学基金,荣获军事科学技术进步奖一等奖、国家科学技术进步奖二等奖和多项省部级奖项…… 如今,已高位截肢10余年、历经700多次透析的王戟,依然在强国强军的新征程上“冲锋”—— 在习近平强军思想引领下,王戟以轮椅为战位,以时不我待的紧迫感,始终战斗在瞬息万变的国防科研最前沿。 王戟的人生,从“快进”到“暂停”、从“重启”到“加速”,他以勇攀高峰的意志和永不言败的信念,在轮椅上“跑出”了属于这个时代的加速度。 初心 初见王戟,他清澈的眼神、灿烂的笑容如春水般温暖。因截肢位置过高,他的双腿已完全被整齐叠放在轮椅上的裤腿取代。 王戟在校园里穿行(2023年6月7日摄)。新华社发 命运,可以夺走他的健康,却从未改变他的初心。 “执干戈以卫社稷”——这是父母为他取名的寓意。1969年11月,王戟出生于上海,翌年随父母支援三线建设迁往湖南常德。 “勤学少年”,是人们对他最初的印象——从上小学起,因为出色的数学天赋,王戟一路“跳级”。1983年,不满14岁的王戟以优异的成绩考入国防科大计算机系。 同年12月,我国首台亿次巨型机“银河-Ⅰ”在国防科大研制成功,使我国成为世界上第三个能够独立设计和制造巨型机的国家。 彼时,举国沸腾,“银河-Ⅰ”由此被称作“争气机”。 少年王戟见证了中国计算机事业吹响自立自强的第一声号角,他与“银河”的缘分就此开启——后来,他的硕士和博士研究生导师,正是“银河-Ⅰ”的软件系统总负责人陈火旺院士。 在一次座无虚席的学术讲座中,陈火旺激情飞扬地阐述国家对信息技术的迫切需求,鼓励年轻人要敢于啃“硬骨头”,奋力向高技术进军。 台下,王戟心潮澎湃。 一个懵懂少年“想学计算机”的愿望,逐渐升华为对“国防”二字的坚定信念:“用计算机助力国防。” 采访中,我们问他:“跟随陈院士学习,对您人生影响最大的是什么?” “自信!”王戟不假思索地答道:“‘银河-Ⅰ’的系统软件,就是我们国家最早的大型软件工程之一。在软件自主可控方面,我们有信心作出自己的贡献。” 王戟在大学组织的公开采访上回答媒体提问(2026年6月7日摄)。新华社发(韩启扬 摄) 从慈云桂、陈火旺等老一辈“银河人”身上,他读懂了中国科学家自信自立自强的“密码”:面对国家和军队需求,“豁出命也要搞出来”的拼搏精神。 博士毕业留校后,王戟下定决心在软件自主可控方面闯出一条新路。 他坚信,外国人能搞的,中国人也能搞。 王戟在入党申请书里这样写道:“我愿意为党的事业贡献出自己的全部精力,并为之奋斗终生。” 这条承载着科技自强的自主创新之路,他一走就是30多年。 开拓 在我国计算机软件领域,很少有人不知道王戟。 中国科学院院士、国防科大教授王怀民这样评价他:“王戟是我国高可信软件领域的主要开拓者。” 从逐梦航天到挺进深蓝,从战机凌空到长剑倚天,从超算登顶到经纬沙场……从事高可信软件技术相关研究30余年来,无数令国人历历在目的瞬间背后,都有着王戟和团队的身影。 然而,30多年前,这一领域在我国近乎于“无人区”。 上世纪末,随着我军由机械化向信息化转型,王戟敏锐地意识到软件安全直接关系军事乃至国防安全。 与此同时,国外一起突发事件引起了王戟的关注:某型运载火箭在升空几十秒后轰然爆炸。 事故的根源,竟是一行代码的错误! 身披戎装的王戟意识到,“软件可靠性”一定会成为国防安全的命门。他反复追问自己:当软件成为大国重器的“大脑”,怎样才能确保它在最关键的时刻绝不出错? 年轻的王戟带着对国家战略需求的前瞻思考,酝酿出一个全新的研究方向——高可信软件技术:用数学方法,从底层逻辑验证代码的正确性。 “高可信软件是‘软件的医生’。”王戟团队成员、国防科大教授董威介绍说,通过给大国重器的软件系统进行“全身CT扫描”、精准诊断,找出深层次隐藏的漏洞和隐患。 1999年,初出茅庐的王戟受邀参与航天相关软件的可靠性评估任务。他和团队成员反复推演、多维测试,从几十个模型中筛选出五六个,逐一调试参数、迭代优化……历经无数次试错打磨,“最适配”模型被成功锁定。 2003年,王戟与导师陈火旺院士等人共同发表论文《高可信软件工程技术》。这是我国在该领域最早的系统性论文,至今仍被学术界高频次引用。 “只有做前沿的研究,才更容易发现前沿。”王戟常用这句话勉励自己,也用来鼓舞他的同事和学生们。 王戟(右)与同事进行项目交流(2026年5月17日摄)。新华社发(范军威 摄) 他敏锐地预测到,随着时代的发展,国家安全、军队信息化建设对于高可信软件的需求与日俱增,亟需培养、建立一支一流的团队。 于是,王戟在国内首开“高可信软件技术”研究生课程,为国家培育该领域专业人才。 高可信软件是基础性、关键性研究,门槛高、难度大、周期长,很多人中途退出,不断有人劝王戟放弃。 王戟的回答很简单:“这个‘冷板凳’总要有人坐。” 数十年来,在这个“冷板凳”上,王戟和他的团队却稳定得“惊人”——毛晓光、陈立前等骨干成员,哪一个在业内不是响当当?是什么力量让他们如此团结一心地与王戟一起来坐这个“冷板凳”? 答案很简单。正如王戟所言:“高可信软件技术瞄准的是国防装备关键的技术底座,也许短期内很难快速出成果,但基础研究瞄准的是未来。”在他的带领下,共同的信仰和使命,让这个团队凝聚成了一支燃烧的“火烛”——着眼国家和军队的需求,啃最难啃的“骨头”,只求高可信软件越来越可靠! 2012年,王戟团队接到航天工业部门一个关于可信软件的迫切需求,主要问题是系统软件偶发中断等缺陷。经考察调研,当时国内已有的软件工具难以检测发现。 干,还是不干?“科研就像爬山,坚持下去总会有办法。”王戟带领团队从零做起,成功解决了这个难题。他们研发的工具,后来在航天软件质量保障中发挥了突出作用。 多年来,王戟主持和参与重要科研项目30余项,部分项目成果处于国际领先地位。他带领团队,始终以国家装备建设重大工程为牵引,为国家和军队重大型号工程关键软件的可靠性和安全性作出了重要贡献。 一次次,当人们的目光聚焦震撼登场的“国之重器”时,王戟和团队早已隐匿在茫茫人海,默默为国家安全和军队高质量发展铸牢软件的“高可信之盾”。 “重启” 照片上,年轻的王戟身体健全,陪伴在不满2岁的女儿身旁,他的笑容像身后花田的花朵般灿烂。 这是长年累月忙碌在科研一线的王戟,难得与女儿共度的一段温情时光。而这样的画面,永远停留在了2012年的春天。 数月之后,意外降临。 2013年1月23日凌晨,王戟突发主动脉夹层。这是一种极其凶险的心血管急症,死亡率高达20%…… 有多凶险?为了保住性命,王戟急诊接受了“升主动脉置换+主动脉弓置换+支架象鼻植入术”,手术长达13个小时,又因下肢动脉栓塞导致肌肉坏死,不得不接受“双下肢高位截肢”。 王戟的病情牵动着所有人的心,一拨又一拨人赶到医院探望。学校主要领导到医院坐镇,不停地协调:“他是我们学校和军队的宝贝,请不惜一切代价抢救他,挽留住他的生命……” 湘雅医院的病历档案显示,从2013年1月23日至2013年7月1日,王戟总共做了10余次手术,仅深度清创手术就做了7次,前后在重症监护室待了147天。 术后半清醒时,王戟平躺着、看不到自己的腿还剩多少,妻子黄春强忍悲痛比划,两个手掌几乎贴在一起:“还剩这么一段。” 王戟知道后,重重地叹了一口气。 所有人都认为:重病在身的王戟,或许会按下“暂停键”了。 “王戟,你什么时候能好呀,我们都等着你回来继续工作呢!”领导、同事纷纷鼓励他。 可谁也没有想到,尚在重症监护室的王戟,开始了新的“起跑”—— 双腿从大腿根部截去,一时无法适应;两只手也因为长时间的神经压迫时常麻木。他一次次好不容易坐起来,又一次次瞬间倒下去…… 即使每一次都疼得大汗淋漓,他依然忍着剧痛挣扎着爬起来,翻资料,敲键盘,做课题…… 王戟在康复治疗期间尝试佩戴假肢(资料照片)。新华社发 湘雅医院的医护人员,见过太多病人,而在重症监护室里坚持学习、工作的病号,还是头一次见。 即使跌入人生至暗谷底,始终未曾泯灭的,是王戟心底里那枚信仰的火种。 2013年11月5日,习近平主席视察国防科大。视察中,习主席强调,努力把国防科大办成高素质新型军事人才培养高地、国防科技自主创新高地,为实现中国梦、强军梦提供强有力的人才和科技支持。 王戟在病床上反复看了好几遍新闻——统帅的殷殷嘱托,中国梦、强军梦的时代召唤,国防科技自主创新的使命重担……在他心里汇聚成了一个念头:“重启”自己! “我很幸运,我的脑子和手是好的,基本工作条件没有损失。我觉得一切都好办。”王戟用计算机的语言来“打趣”自己:我的身体出现了“死机”,但只要“重启”一下,一切照常。 新时代强国强军的征程上,王戟,开始了人生的第二次冲锋! 冲锋 经过一年多的康复训练,2015年春节过后的一天,同事们在国防科大校园里惊喜地发现:那个脸上始终带着笑容的王戟,摇着轮椅回来了! 在王戟康复期间,学校为他改造了无障碍通道和厕所,并把他每日工作必经之处都进行了无障碍处理。 大伙说,他是“‘王’者归来”——新时代的强军号角已经吹响,很多工作都等着他来挑大梁…… 2015年,王戟毅然牵头申请了某国防973项目,并担任技术首席专家。这是当年面向国家和军队急需的唯一纯软件项目。 申请立项的那段日子,一连几个夜晚,王戟辗转难眠。 一个场景不时浮现在他的脑海:一次参加学术会议,原本滔滔不绝介绍产品技术的国外研究人员,一听说他们来自中国、来自国防科大,便开始顾左右而言他,继而干脆闭口不言。 缄默背后,是无声的较量。 王戟知道,传统意义上的战争,自己很难再参与。但在科技自立自强的战场上,他依旧是那个代码铸盾、冲锋不止的钢铁战士。 2017年7月19日,又一个难忘的日子。伴随改革强军的时代脉动,习近平主席向新调整组建的国防科技大学授军旗、致训词,标定这所走过峥嵘岁月的军校新的历史方位——国防科技大学是高素质新型军事人才培养和国防科技自主创新高地。 “高地”,统帅对国防科技大学的殷切期望。 “既然是高地,在科技强军、人才强军的征途中,我们理应走在最前列。”使命和血性,在心中升腾,汇聚成王戟在这片“高地”上“重启”的全部力量。 只是,这场“重启”没有快捷键—— 为了让身体适应工作的强度,王戟在康复训练中“挥汗如雨”;为了提高出行效率,他放弃了效果不佳的假肢而选择了终身与轮椅相伴;为了保持身体状态,他坚持使用手动轮椅作为自己的“健身器材”…… 王戟在医院接受康复治疗期间工作(资料照片)。新华社发 作为技术首席专家,项目推进过程中,有数不清的规划论证、节点检查、验收评审需要他去外地出差。学校和学院领导表示过担忧,但出于强烈的责任感,王戟始终亲力亲为。 时间久了,王戟还摸索出一套“出差独门秘籍”。 ——独自出行,他自创了上下车的“鞍马跳”:上车时用手臂和腰腹力量将整个身体腾挪起来,稳稳落在副驾驶座位上,下车则相反,全套动作又快又准; ——能当天往返的行程,绝不过夜。他经常赶最早的航班,忙完再赶当天最晚一趟航班返回长沙,以保证第二天照常出现在办公室; ——他的行李也很简单。胸前背一个双肩背书包,里面装着资料、笔记本电脑和换洗衣物…… 一次,因为出差会议久坐,王戟右侧截肢面的皮瓣受损溃破。面对医生的叮嘱,王戟笑眯眯地答应了。 然而,没过多久,他又出差了…… 为了不耽误进度,国防973项目推进那几年,王戟累计出差70余次,连长沙黄花机场的工作人员都熟悉了这位“轮椅教授”。 历经6年殚精竭虑,王戟和团队针对不同领域、不同类型的软件可靠性问题,打造出一套“工具箱”。2021年,项目顺利通过验收,综合评价报告这样写道:“整体技术水平处于国际前列、国内领先,部分可比指标处于国际领先。”2025年1月,依托项目孵化的成果,王戟获评军事科学技术进步奖一等奖,相关技术成功应用于多项关键国防装备。 同时,王戟还顶着项目压力,推动成立了中国计算机学会形式化方法专委会。 作为高可信软件技术的“数学根基”,形式化方法研究至关重要。“成立专委会,为的就是要凝聚起全国范围内为数不多、但极其可贵的科研力量。”王戟说。 如今,这支宝贵的科研力量,已从2015年最初的几十人发展到了逾千人。 “深山老林里的开路人,总是最先见到日出。”有人用这句话来评价王戟。 在王戟身上,科技自立自强从来不是一句口号,而是拼尽全力的冲锋。 加速 紧跟新时代科技强军的步伐,王戟的战位发生了深刻的“位移”——北斗组网的星轨,月球表面的“脚印”,驶向深蓝的航迹,还有联合作战中穿空的电波,都在无形地牵动着王戟和团队冲锋的方向。 王戟“嗅”到了时代扑面而来的紧迫感:“做软件的人都说‘软件定义战争’。智能化作战就是比谁的软件又快又好。” 然而,命运也在争抢他的时间。 2021年,王戟晕倒在讲台,被确诊为肾衰竭,且不具备肾移植的条件。随着病情发展,他一周需三次透析才可维持身体状态。 王戟在医院透析(2026年6月6日摄)。新华社发(韩启扬 摄) 经历过生死的人,更懂得时间的分量。 时间不等人—— 为了节省时间,他长期住在病房,“病房—办公室”两点一线; 为省去往返食堂的时间,他吃饭经常在办公室解决,偶尔利用中午时间回家看望一下家人; 即使在病床上透析,他也用手机查看国内外相关领域的前沿资料; 出差时,轮椅扶手坏了,他顾不上修理,用胶带缠缠继续赶路…… 时间不等人—— “科研做的是今天的事,教学培养的是未来的人,两样都放不下。”王戟说。 教育是国之大计、党之大计。为了这个根本大计,王戟把学生的成长作为自己最大的成功,不仅传授高可信软件的知识,更种下高可信人生的种子。 王戟(中)在图书馆与学生讨论(2026年5月20日摄)。新华社发(范军威 摄) 他指导学生有个习惯——很少用PPT,而是让学生在白板上用马克笔推导,一旦发现逻辑上的断层,就立刻叫停。 学员杜易记得,在讲到形式化方法的一个章节内容时,他在白板上写到一半卡住了。王戟接过马克笔,从基础定理开始推导,一行行工整的公式、清晰的逻辑链条跃然白板之上。 “卡住的十几分钟,是我那学期学得最扎实的。”杜易说。 这种“白板教学法”,是王戟从导师陈火旺院士那里继承来的。这样的方法,也被王戟的同事、学生所继承。一批又一批在白板前受过磨砺的人,如今都成了各自领域的中坚力量。 时间不等人—— 学生们都说,王戟老师的时间是个变量,对自己省之又省,对学生又无比慷慨。 学生刘万伟改进一个经典算法遇到挫折,一度想放弃。王戟告诉他:“这是国家软件领域的根技术,花再多的时间都是值得的。”师徒二人潜心坚持了四年,最终通过紧致的分析,将算法复杂度上界降低了一个指数倍。刘万伟后来说,“没有王老师那句话,我肯定坚持不下来”。 王戟总是笑着说自己“破车要慢慢开”。但一干起活来,他摇轮椅的速度,正常人需要小跑才能赶上。 “急”与“不急”,都源自王戟对使命的理解——“习主席要求科技工作者把论文写在祖国的大地上。作为一名军队科研人员,就是要把论文写在强国强军实践中。” 为了强军,他可以争分夺秒、时不我待地奔波忙碌;为了强军,他可以用几十年来研究高可信软件技术;为了强军,他还可以花四年的时间去指导学生改进一个算法……他说,“做科研,要顶天立地。顶天,就是聚焦国家和军队重大战略需求;立地,就是一切为新质生产力、新质战斗力服务”。 荣光 国防科大计算机学院场馆内,一幅名为“小尾巴”的画前,轮椅上的王戟开怀地笑着。画中,妻子黄春在专注地工作,女儿扎着马尾辫,趴在计算机机房的地上帮叔叔阿姨记录数据、贴标签…… 这幅画的背后,是一个令人景仰又泪目的故事—— 2021年上半年,王戟因肾衰竭,需要去外地治疗。与此同时,王戟的妻子、“天河”超级计算机编译团队的主任设计师黄春,也处于任务攻坚的关键阶段,需要在天津集中攻关。 王戟抢在前面对黄春说:“你放心去,我可以的。” 黄春这才下了决心,带上年幼的女儿奔赴天津。经过2个月攻关,黄春团队参与研制的“天河”E级计算机验证系统,勇夺两项世界第一。 “对于科研人员来说,事业上的相互成全,就是最好的陪伴。”王戟说。 有一种“风轻云淡”,却藏着极致的深情。王戟和黄春,以对使命的忠诚、对国防科技事业的追求,寄托彼此的信任和鼓励。 王戟生病那年,女儿才2岁多。上小学时,女儿曾为爸爸画了一幅名为“台阶”的“规划图”:台阶一级一级向上延伸……图的右下角,女儿写道:“台阶象征着父亲的自尊和理想”。 人的站立,不仅靠双腿,也靠精神;军人的站立,不仅是挺拔的姿态,更是永远向上的冲锋——“胸怀祖国、团结协作、志在高峰、奋勇拼搏”的银河精神,就是陈火旺等老一辈“银河人”在艰苦攻关中淬炼出来的。 “银河连着中南海”——这七个字,刻在“天河”楼里的一块铜牌上。这七个字,字字千钧,无声见证着国防科大全体师生始终与党、国家、军队命运的同频共振。 王戟从前辈手中接过的,不只是一份学问,更是一份使命。他常对学生说:国防科大的学生,要做“卡脖子”技术的攻坚者,而不是追热点的逐利者。 新征程,新使命。王戟和所有“国防科大人”更加无法忘记的是,2023年9月1日,习近平主席致信祝贺国防科技大学建校70周年,充分肯定学校培养了一大批优秀人才,攻克了一大批尖端科技,取得了一大批重大武器装备研发成果,希望学校努力在实施科技强军战略、人才强军战略中发挥重要作用。 七十载,书写为党育人、为国铸盾的华章;新征程,开启充满光荣和梦想的远征。 聚焦“十五五 ”这一“科技强国建设的关键攻坚期”,王戟团队又向人工智能的可信问题发起了新的冲锋。 “军事智能属于前沿方向,对应的高可信软件技术没有现成经验、无法靠引进换取,只能依靠自主创新。”放眼未来,王戟信心满怀:“全力以赴攻研奋斗,绝不辜负统帅嘱托。” 轮椅之上,写就忠诚。 他是王戟—— 从银河精神的传承者到科研高地的攀登者,从强军路上的冲锋者到向着中华民族伟大复兴踔厉奋发的“奔跑者”…… 他把个人奋斗融入时代洪流,用轮椅上“跑出”的加速度,谱写了一曲新时代的强军战歌!
