Field Garrison Training Logistics and Equipment Support Takes on a New Look
PLA Daily report by correspondents Sun Xingwei and Lin Duo: "Mobile field stations" (移动兵站) integrating basic support facilities, maintenance shelter vehicles maneuvering alongside combat vehicles, "clothing and equipment supermarkets" (被装超市) pushed forward to the front lines of exercises and training… In the height of summer, from the desert Gobi to coastal tidal flats, logistics and equipment support methods at field garrison training sites are taking on a new look.
At the Zhurihe Joint Training Base, a reporter observed crowds of personnel inside a temporary "clothing and equipment supermarket." In response to the long duration of field garrison training cycles and the inconvenience of clothing and equipment distribution, the Central Military Commission Logistic Support Department decided to pilot temporary "clothing and equipment supermarkets" at large training bases such as Zhurihe, pushing support forces forward to the front lines of exercises and training.
At a plateau garrison training site several thousand meters above sea level, after an Army unit arrived, officers and soldiers did not busy themselves unloading vehicles and pitching tents as they had in the past. Instead, they went directly to the "public property warehouse" (公物仓) to draw field tents, oxygen generators, container housing units, and other materiel. "In the past, when relocating for garrison training, everything from bedding to office supplies had to be brought along, and loading and unloading materiel was time-consuming and labor-intensive. Now with the 'public property warehouse,' the volume of materiel transported for garrison training has decreased, and the time required to set up garrison camp areas has been cut by more than half," the unit's leadership explained.
At dusk on the plateau, entering the field bivouac site of an Air Force unit's mobile detachment, a camouflage-patterned shelter vehicle integrating functions including dining, accommodation, command, and materiel storage and transport caught the reporter's attention. "This is the 'mobile field station' we modified — basic support facilities are integrated inside the shelter," a soldier from the unit told the reporter.
Behind the many changes in field garrison training logistics support methods lies a reshaping of the support chain (保障链路). At one garrison training site, a brigade of the Guilin Joint Logistic Support Center and an Army combined-arms brigade organized training in typical mission groupings. During the training, a battalion of the combined-arms brigade urgently needed ammunition resupply; the battalion commander submitted the requirement directly to the ammunition battalion of the center's brigade. Upon receiving the requirement, the ammunition battalion rapidly prepared the corresponding basic load of ammunition and delivered it to the mission unit. "In the past, similar support requirements had to go through approval at each echelon, which took considerable time and was liable to delay the operational opportunity (贻误战机). Now, within certain limits and priorities, mission units can submit support requirements point-to-point through the appropriate channels," said the commander of the center's brigade.
At the garrison training site of an Army combined-arms brigade, the reporter observed equipment maintenance shelter vehicles maneuvering alongside the unit. "In the past, when equipment broke down, it often had to be sent to the rear for repair — the round trip took at least half a day. Now that maintenance forces are pushed forward, support efficiency is much higher," said the commander of a repair company who had just completed a barrel inspection on an infantry fighting vehicle's cannon. He noted that the "equipment Internet of Things" (装备物联网) system now establishes an electronic health record for each piece of equipment, significantly improving equipment readiness rates.
At an Air Force airfield station, a "zero-accompaniment" (零伴随) consolidated support model allows garrison training units to "not drive a single support vehicle, not bring a single ground support person," achieving "move-in-ready" (拎包入驻) operations. To make logistics and equipment support serve combat capability more efficiently, the airfield station has abandoned the mindset of "prioritizing daily life over combat readiness" (重生活轻战备), investing heavily in cultivating support backbone personnel qualified across all aircraft types and all munitions types, and filling gaps in tow vehicles, power vehicles, and aviation ammunition for each aircraft type.
A change in concepts drives support methods to continuously orient toward and serve combat (向战为战). Deep in the mountains, the Joint Logistic Support Force's No. 924 Hospital established a field medical station at an Army unit's comprehensive exercise and training site, conducting drills in mass casualty sorting, frontline bandaging, and medical evacuation, tempering medical personnel's battlefield casualty care capabilities under near-combat conditions. "Breaking the 'clinical mindset' (临床思维) and establishing the 'combat rescue concept' (战救理念) — this is a vivid microcosm of the transformation and upgrading of medical support forces (卫勤力量) in realistic combat training," said a hospital leader.
Support capability is combat capability. Surveying the garrison training sites of various units, the forward positioning of support forces, the reshaping of support chains, and the upgrading of support concepts have provided powerful backing for officers and soldiers to throw themselves into training for combat readiness.
