China's 12th Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion to UNMISS passed a UN combat readiness capability assessment conducted by a seven-member UNMISS Sector Juba team in May 2025, receiving top marks across 370 items in 11 categories and ranking among the highest of all troop-contributing countries. The result is consistent with China's sustained effort to demonstrate professional military competence within UN peacekeeping frameworks, reinforcing Beijing's use of UNMISS participation as a venue for legitimizing PLA expeditionary capabilities and building institutional standing with the UN system.

By Wang Shuai, Yang Shiwei, Lyu Junqi and Wu Zhongwei JUBA, May 13 -- The 12th Chinese Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) recently passed the UN combat readiness capability assessment with high standards and all excellent grades, ranking among the top of all troop-contributing countries in the comprehensive evaluation. The UN combat readiness capability assessment is designed to comprehensively examine the overall capabilities of peacekeeping forces in performing authorized missions and responding to various emergencies. During the assessment, a seven-member assessment team dispatched by the UNMISS Sector Juba conducted the comprehensive inspection and evaluation of the Chinese peacekeepers' military quality as well as crisis response and civilian protection capabilities. Covering more than 370 specific items in 11 categories, this assessment comprehensively examined the Chinese peacekeeping battalion's combat readiness mechanism and the Chinese peacekeepers' combat readiness awareness and emergency response capability. Moreover, it provided professional guidance for the contingent to optimize task response procedures and improve mission execution capability in the future.
