PLA and People's Armed Police Officers and Soldiers, Militia Continue Fighting on the Rescue Front Line
PLA Daily, Nanning, July 9 — Affected by the residual circulation of Typhoon "Maysak," multiple areas in Guangxi have experienced sustained heavy rainfall, triggering severe flood and waterlogging disasters. Officers and soldiers of the PLA and the People's Armed Police (PAP), along with militia forces, have been continuously conducting emergency rescue and relief operations and post-disaster silt-clearing work in Guigang, Nanning, Wuzhou, and other locations, helping the public restore normal production and daily life.
On the evening of the 8th, due to sustained heavy rainfall, a piping failure (管涌) occurred at a reservoir embankment along the section from the Lizhan Railway to Hengling Village on the south bank of the Yu River in Guigang City. The Southern Theater Command Army deployed officers and soldiers to conduct inspection and assessment of key areas and to reinforce and seal the breach. Since the disaster struck, more than ten thousand teachers and students at the Xijiang Education Park in Guigang City have been trapped; officers and soldiers who rushed to the scene have been continuously evacuating teachers and students and transporting relief supplies. The Guangxi Military District deployed more than 4,200 officers, soldiers, and militia members to transfer trapped residents and clear silt and obstructions. A waterworks in Guigang City faced the risk of unit shutdown due to flooding of its pump room; the PAP Guangxi General Corps Mobile Detachment dispatched forces in an emergency response to seal and reinforce leakage points around the perimeter of the waterworks. Pingnan County's Da'an Town was struck by flooding, and the PAP Guigang Detachment organized officers and soldiers to participate in emergency rescue and relief operations.
In parts of Hengzhou City and Binyang County, accumulated waterlogging has not yet receded, and the risk of secondary disasters remains. On the afternoon of the 9th, the Nanning Garrison dispatched more than 600 additional militia members to Binyang County to participate in silt-clearing tasks, and organized more than 500 militia members to proceed separately to disaster-affected villages and towns to carry out supply delivery, road silt-clearing, and hazard inspection work. More than 560 officers and soldiers of the PAP Guangxi General Corps are executing silt-clearing and obstacle-removal tasks along the Hengzhou Yunbiao section of National Highway 209, clearing blocked roads.
Affected by heavy rainfall, floodwaters on the Wuzhou section of the Xi River have exceeded the warning level by three meters, and some townships have experienced internal waterlogging. The Wuzhou Military Sub-district rapidly dispatched militia forces to assist in reinforcing embankments and evacuating disaster-affected residents.
