The 10th Company of the 4th Garrison Support Regiment, PAP Shanghai General Corps, Has Provided Voluntary Party History Interpretation for More Than 20 Consecutive Years
In midsummer in Shanghai, at No. 76 Xingye Road, the red window lattices of the Museum of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China gleam brilliantly in the sunlight. "Over the past 100-plus years, the great founding spirit of the Party (伟大建党精神) has been like a torch, illuminating the journey of China's revolution, construction, and reform…" Inside the museum, Liu Yi, a squad leader from the 10th Company of the 4th Garrison Support Regiment of the PAP Shanghai General Corps, is providing interpretation of the Long March thematic exhibition for visitors. "Every time I give an interpretation, it feels as though I have retraced the Long March alongside our forebears," he said. The Museum of the First National Congress of the CPC carries the warmth of a century of faith, and has also witnessed the passing down of their voluntary interpretation team.
It is understood that since 1998, officers and soldiers of the 10th Company have used their spare time to go voluntarily to the site of the First National Congress of the Party to provide voluntary interpretation of Party history and disseminate Party theory. In the spring of 2022, Chairman Xi replied in writing to all officers and soldiers of the 10th Company, encouraging them to "consolidate and expand the achievements of Party history study and education, consciously carry forward the great founding spirit of the Party, serve well as 'sentinels beneath the neon lights' (霓虹灯下的哨兵) of the new era, and forever be loyal guardians of the Party and the people."
Company political instructor Yang Lei told this reporter that on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the Museum of the First National Congress of the CPC has welcomed large numbers of Party members from across the country, and many visitors have stopped before the "Map of the Current Situation" (时局图) displayed in the museum. In the notes of soldier-interpreter Zhong Zhihao, the introduction to this period of history is extremely detailed.
"Since modern times, the aggression and plunder of Western powers brought profound suffering to the Chinese nation. In order to save the nation and the people, the Chinese people waged an arduous and extraordinary struggle against foreign aggressors and domestic reactionary forces." Zhong Zhihao said that every time he interprets the "Map of the Current Situation," his mood is especially heavy.
"The birth of our Party was an historical inevitability—it was the ultimate answer arrived at after the Chinese revolution experienced countless failures." Zhong Zhihao explained that this is precisely the meaning embodied in the large bronze relief sculpture "The Starting Point" (起点) in the museum's entrance hall.
On the evening of July 23, 1921, at No. 106 Wangzhi Road in the French Concession of Shanghai (today's No. 76 Xingye Road), the First National Congress of the CPC opened. This congress fundamentally changed China's destiny and opened a new era in which the Chinese people would march toward brightness and happiness.
"As a voluntary Party history interpreter, one must first serve well as a disseminator of the great founding spirit of the Party." Zhong Zhihao told this reporter that the more times he has given interpretations, the more deeply he has come to appreciate this statement. During one interpretation session, a primary school student pressed him with persistent questions about an old photograph. Seeing the child's eager and reverent gaze, Zhong Zhihao drew on his extensive knowledge to answer patiently. At the end of the visit, the student solemnly asked his parents: "Mom and Dad, when will I be able to join the Party?" That question moved Zhong Zhihao deeply: "Faith became concrete in that moment."
As the 117th voluntary Party history interpreter in the company, Liu Yi is responsible not only for routine venue interpretation but has also successively completed more than ten major thematic interpretation assignments. Opening his interpretation scripts, one finds not only detailed commentary but also dense supplementary annotations covering knowledge extensions and further reflections.
"The more deeply one understands the history of the Party, the more one feels that the great founding spirit of the Party is the spiritual source of our Party, and the more resolute one's conviction to carry forward the great founding spirit of the Party in the practice of strengthening the military (强军实践)." Liu Yi reflected that years of interpreting Party history and disseminating Party theory have not only influenced others but have also been reshaping himself. In the summer of 2024, having already agreed with his family to leave the service, he persuaded his parents and applied to remain with the unit. "The senior squad leader was compelled to leave the service for health reasons, but the cultivation of the company's voluntary Party history interpreters must not be interrupted." Over two years, Liu Yi has not only trained eight core voluntary Party history interpreters but has also cumulatively delivered more than 600 voluntary interpretation sessions, earning the title of the company's "gold-medal interpreter."
One must not only recount Party history and military history well, but must also put the founding mission into practice. On the day of this reporter's visit, Liu Yi and his comrades, having just completed their interpretation duties, had no time to rest and hurried through light rain to Nanjing Road. It turned out that the day was the company's monthly public service day, and also the day Liu Yi had arranged to give a haircut to Li Ru, an elderly local resident.
"So many years have passed, and although the officers and soldiers have changed generation after generation, the public service activities on Nanjing Road have never been interrupted." The elderly Li Ru's words could not help but stir this reporter's heart—the martyrs, looking back, should smile with relief; those who carry the banner forward will always come.
