PLA Hong Kong Garrison Holds 'July 1st' Open Barracks Events at Shek Kong and San Wai Camps
Xinhua News Agency, Hong Kong, June 29 (Reporter Xiao Yichen) — To celebrate the 29th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the stationing of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Garrison held 'July 1st' open barracks events at Shek Kong and San Wai camps from June 27 to 28, with nearly 34,000 Hong Kong residents entering the camps to visit.
The Shek Kong camp open event opened with a national flag-raising ceremony. Residents present and Hong Kong Garrison officers and soldiers stood at attention together, watching the five-starred red flag rise slowly. In the subsequent military band formation and rifle drill performances, the imposing image and high spirits displayed by the garrison officers and soldiers drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.
At the helicopter aerial dynamic display, several domestically produced helicopters entered the area in sequence and completed a series of high-difficulty maneuvers in the blue sky. The pilots, through superb flying skills, fully demonstrated the superior maneuverability of domestically produced helicopters and also reflected the solid combat qualities (过硬的战斗素养) of the garrison officers and soldiers. Residents on the scene raised their phones one after another to capture the stunning moments.
In the static equipment display area, many Hong Kong residents stopped to take photos in front of the fighter aircraft, experiencing the Chinese spirit and Chinese strength (中国精神、中国力量) embodied in domestically produced equipment. Many residents expressed that seeing the ever-advancing achievements of the motherland's independently researched and developed equipment made them feel extremely proud as Chinese people, and that having garrison soldiers protecting Hong Kong gave them great peace of mind.
San Wai camp was likewise packed with crowds. Not only did traditional demonstration events such as military band and drill performances, hunter combat, and shooting experience activities give the audience a feast for the eyes, but performances in diverse formats such as 'flash mobs' and 'fitness shows' also made the atmosphere on the scene very lively.
Garrison officers and soldiers also prepared for Hong Kong residents a calligraphy and painting art exhibition, a culinary skills display, and interactive intangible cultural heritage (非遗) activities, conveying the deep cultural foundation of the garrison officers and soldiers and allowing residents to feel that life in the barracks is both 'hard-core' (硬核) and 'warm' (有温度).
Prior to this, the Hong Kong Garrison had already held a 'July 1st' open barracks event at Stonecutters Island camp from June 20 to 21. It is reported that this year the Hong Kong Garrison opened a total of three camps — Stonecutters Island, Shek Kong, and San Wai — with a combined total of more than 58,000 people entering the camps to visit.
