A 'Military Tome' Carries a Steadfast Commitment Spanning the Years, Inspiring Officers and Soldiers to Sharpen Their Skills and Continue Striving
A 'Military Tome' Tempers the Soldier's Heart

In the military history gallery of an Air Force brigade, a weapons theory book sits quietly on display — its pages yellowed and curled at the edges, its margins filled with handwritten annotations. This 'military tome' is no rare treasure, yet it carries a steadfast commitment spanning the years, engraved with the determined pursuit of generation after generation of surface-to-air missile (地导) officers and soldiers who studied diligently and strove for excellence.

In 1999, new recruit Huang Jiacheng joined the military and was assigned to this brigade, initially posted to the generator unit. By chance, he witnessed a radar antenna transceiver vehicle operating nimbly and acquiring signals, and developed a keen interest, sparking the idea of self-study. But faced with the barrier of theoretical knowledge, he found every step a struggle. Technical backbone Zhai Liqiang learned of this and proactively extended a helping hand to guide him, presenting him with a weapons theory book that embodied Zhai's own painstaking effort and was filled with detailed annotations. Huang Jiacheng received it as a precious gift, reading it repeatedly and benefiting greatly. The following year, he passed the entrance examination for a non-commissioned officer school with outstanding results and systematically studied the antenna transceiver specialty.
Upon returning after completing his studies, he arrived just as the unit was fielding a new type of equipment. Huang Jiacheng took the lead in studying the performance of the new equipment — spending his days rooted in the training ground conducting hands-on drills, and his nights bent over his desk writing furiously, compiling his learning, reflections, and practical experience into thick notebooks, continuously summarizing lessons and refining operating methods. In the end, he achieved the top score in brigade-wide assessments, became the sole non-commissioned officer technician-in-charge for that equipment at the time, and was awarded the First Class Prize of the All-Army Outstanding Non-Commissioned Officer Talent Award.
In 2019, the brigade's military history gallery was completed. While sorting through company history, officers and soldiers learned the story behind this book and solemnly recommended it as an exhibit. From that point on, the book was placed on display in the brigade's military history gallery, becoming a torch of the spirit inspiring officers and soldiers to sharpen their skills and continue striving.
The torch is passed down, and talented personnel emerge in abundance. Over the years, Huang Jiacheng — now grown into a First-Grade Master Sergeant (一级军士长) — has, just as Zhai Liqiang once guided him, enthusiastically mentored and cultivated new backbone personnel. When Second-Grade Master Sergeant (二级军士长) Yan Guisi first enlisted, his work performance was outstanding but his temperament was somewhat impetuous. When Huang Jiacheng led him in tackling a certain highly difficult subject, he both set an example and placed demands on him, continuously tempering his character. Under Huang Jiacheng's mentorship, Yan Guisi twice won first place in theater command competitions and captured the brigade-level competition championship five times.
